What’s Google ‘Add me to search’ and How to Make One.

The People Card is a special Google India offering that allows you to post your personal profile online. Just imagine that your business card turns into a virtual one. It has the same information as the physical card, but with other added ways to share your work / hobby through your social profiles and a short biography that you want to share about yourself. So here’s what the Google People Card is and how to make one for yourself!

How is it different from Google Maps

Google Maps is more focused on where rather than what . This means that if your business is well represented offline, posting your location on Google Maps can be a great option along with a phone number.

On the other hand, the People Card feature is just a new way to share your business card. It contains all the basic information about you, your work. On top of that, if you are a freelancer, artist, or other similar work that does not have a fixed address, this option is great for quickly building your online portfolio. For example, if you are a musician, instead of giving your location (sensitive data), you can use the People Card feature to share your SoundCloud or YouTube page in addition to your bio.

How to create your public card

At the moment, you have no option to use it on the desktop version of Chrome. So, you need to open a browser on your mobile. To create a People card, search for “Add me to search” in the address bar and press Enter. In the first result, you can either preview and preview the card, or click Get Started to create your own.

On this page, you must enter all the data that you want to display on your people card. You must fill in some basic details such as your name, location (approximate), about you and your profession. Plus, you get a lot of extra fields like work, education, hometown, website, and phone number.

You don’t have the option to change your name and email address, so you need to be careful with the ID you use, which is automatically selected. Part of this is adding multiple social media profiles that include most platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc. There is no limit to adding social media, so you add all platforms to the list. After that, just click the preview at the bottom, make your changes, if any, and click Save. Now you’re done!

Determinants

While this is a great option to celebrate your online presence, here are some of the limitations that I think should be addressed in the future.

  • It is currently only available on mobile devices.
  • Available in English only.
  • This results in conflicts with people with the same name, so creating a unique identifier
  • If your name or keyword is not searched frequently, Google will not show your card in search results.

Concluding remarks

The new People Card feature is a great way to strengthen your online presence. In my opinion, this is a great way, especially for startups, freelancers, musicians and other artists, to bring all your work together in one space. But since it’s still under development, I can’t wait to know how to proceed if two people have the same name, or it filters relevant information related to my location and profile. Of course, this could raise privacy questions, but still, let’s wait and see how this ends. Until then, try creating your own personal card and let me know what you think in the comments section below.
