The Windows 10 update made Windows a much faster operating system than Windows 7 and 8.1. It also has promising new features like Cortana and Microsoft Edge.
Back side? At the same time, there was a problem that caused a headache – the slow speed of the Internet. Unfortunately there is no one-click solution for this.
The good news is, you don’t need to contact support. You can fix it! Also, do not forget to watch our YouTube video where we also talk about fixing slow internet (in case you prefer to watch rather than read).
Disable (and regularly enable) Windows Update
Disable (and enable it regularly) Windows Update
Disabling Windows Update is a magical solution. But if you do this forever, your operating system will no longer be up to date. So you’ve just opened the door for bugs and viruses.
So use a workaround instead. Unplug and re-enable when ready for updates.
- First, open the Start menu, locate Control Panel and go to the System and Security section.
- Then select Administration.
- Then find and click Services.
- Then scroll down and find Windows Update. Right-click it to select Properties.
- For Startup Type, select Disabled.
- Click Apply.
Close background applications and services
Close background apps and services
It can seem boring if apps like Spotify don’t run in the background while you’re sweating your brow. But if you want to do something with slow loading web pages, you need to remove them.
- First, right-click on the Windows taskbar and launch Task Manager.
- Then go to the Performance tab.
- Click “Open Resource Monitor” at the bottom.
- Go to the Network tab and check processes with a lot of send and receive requests.
- The higher the number of requests, the higher they are in the list of applications and services taking up your bandwidth.
If you want to close built-in background apps and services, here’s how to do it easily:
- First go to Start Settings Privacy.
- Scroll down to access background applications.
- Disable the “Allow apps to run in the background” feature.
- First open the Start Menu Settings Update & Security.
- Open the Windows Update tab and click Advanced Options.
- Go to the Delivery Optimization section.
- Find the section that says Allow booting from other PCs. Be sure to turn it off.
- From the Start menu, go to This PC and right-click to display (and then select) Properties.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand network adapters.
- Select a network card. Then go to the “Advanced” tab.
- Select Large Send Offload v2 (IPv4) and set it to Disabled.
- Select Large Send Offload v2 (IPv6) and set it to Disabled.
- Launch the Start menu and go to Windows PowerShell.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- The Windows PowerShell screen opens. Paste this command:
- After pressing the Enter key, you’re done.
Close peer update process
Close the peer-to-peer update process
Did you know that you are sharing your internet bandwidth with complete strangers? This may not sound right to you, especially since you have not given Windows permission to do so.
A plus? You can fix it!
Disable LSO
Disable LSO
LSO stands for Large Send Offload. As mentioned earlier, background applications can slow down your internet. This is why you should disable them.
Even so, this Windows 10 feature contradicts each other. This forces background applications to consume a large amount of the Internet. Therefore, you need to disable it.
Uninstall Microsoft OneNote
Uninstall Microsoft OneNote
OneNote is a great note-taking app. It works like a bunch of notebooks combined into one large “master notebook”. If you have something random, you can record it using the app. Then you can come back to it later.
This is useful, no doubt. But do you really use it? If not, you need to give it a download.
Get-AppxPackage * OneNote * | Remove-AppxPackage
Update your drivers
Update your drivers
You should also update your drivers. They might have gotten lost in the process or outdated. They may also be incompatible with your current version of Windows.
