Google Assistant routines are an automated set of actions that Google Assistant will do for you when you say a specific phrase.
You can start using this feature right now using one of six out-of-the-box Google Assistant routines. But if you want to get creative, you can set up Google Assistant’s own routines that do a range of whatever Google Assistant is capable of.
In this article, we’ll take a look at six out-of-the-box routines and then show you how to set up your own Google Assistant routines to automate your day.
- Accessing Google Assistant procedures is very easy. Just open the Google Assistant app on your phone and tap the compass icon in the lower right corner of the screen.
How to access Google Assistant actions
- Accessing Google Assistant actions is easy. Simply open the Google Assistant app on your phone and tap on the compass icon in the lower right corner of the screen.
- In the Browse window, tap your profile photo in the upper right corner and select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- On the Settings screen, click the Assistant tab and select Routines.
- On the Google Assistant Routines screen, you will see all ready-made routines that you can start using right away.
Ready actions for Google Assistant
The six out-of-the-box Google Assistant routines include actions that happen when you say certain statements out loud.
- Good Morning: Say Good Morning, Tell Me About My Day, Or I Am Not Sleeping.
- Bedtime: Say “Sleep time”, “Good night” or “Time to get some hay.”
- When leaving home: just say, “I’m leaving. “Or” I’m leaving. ”
- I am home: say “I am home†or “I am backâ€.
- On the way to work: say “Let’s go to workâ€.
- On the way home: say “Let’s go homeâ€.
Although these are predefined procedures, you can customize them as you see fit. Let’s take a closer look at how each of these predefined Google Assistant routines is configured.
Good morning!
In the prepared subroutine menu, click on “Good morning” to see how they are configured.
When this procedure is run, the following actions are automatically performed:
- Silent mode is disabled.
- You will hear the weather forecast for the day.
- You will hear the traffic between your home and work.
- You will hear news from your registered news sources.
As you can see from the list of activities, you can activate many more activities that you might need for your morning routine.
- Adjust any smart lights, smart plugs or other smart devices in your home.
- Customize your smart thermostat.
- Create a “scene” with smart bulbs.
- Hear your agenda from your Google Calendar.
- Listen to any reminders you have asked Google Assistant to remember.
- Adjust the media volume
You can also add any custom action from every command available in Google Assistant.
After completing all the steps, you can also configure this procedure to play music, news, radio station, podcasts, audiobooks, or nothing.
Bedtime program
In the pre-made program menu, tap on Bedtime Mode to see how it is configured.
When this procedure starts, the following actions are automatically performed:
- Silent mode is on
- You will hear the weather forecast for tomorrow.
- You ‘will be prompted to set an alarm for the next day.
You can also enable additional actions.
- Find out about your first calendar event the next morning.
- Customize any smart home devices
- Customize your smart thermostat
- Create a “scene” with smart bulbs.
- Turn on your security system and turn on any smart locks you own.
- Adjust the media volume on your phone.
As with other routines, you can also add any other actions you want. After completing all the steps, you can configure this procedure to play music, sleep sounds, or nothing.
Exit or return home procedures
From the ready-made subroutine menu, touch the Leave Home subroutine to see how it is configured.
By default, no actions are enabled for the out-of-home procedure. However, all of the following actions are available:
- Configure smart devices.
- Set up the smart thermostat.
- Customize smart light themes.
- Arm the security system
- Lock your smart locks.
Add any other actions you like. There are no preset media options here either, but you can select Add Media to include any of the media options you like.
I’m Home only plays music when you tell Google Assistant that you are at home. However, you can also add any of the actions available in the Leave Home subroutine, as well as a few additional features:
- Broadcast I’m Home to all Google Home speakers in the home / li>
- Hear the reminders you asked Google Assistant to tell you when you get home.
You can also play any type of media source you like.
Drive to work
From the Ready Programs menu, click Drive to Work.
This routine includes all of the following by default:
- Learn about traffic conditions from home to work.
- Listen to the weather forecast for the day
- Automatically adjust the volume of media on your phone.
- Play music.
In addition to these actions, you can also enable any of the following actions:
- Hear your Google Calendar agenda for the day.
- Listen to reminders of the day.
- Adjust any smart devices in your home.
- Adjust the thermostat.
- Adjust any smart light modes.
- Set the media volume on your phone.
Music playback is set by default, but you can change this to play any multimedia options you would like to hear on your way to work.
Drive home
In the prepared subroutine menu, click on “Drive home”.
This routine includes all of the following by default:
- Learn about traffic conditions from work to home
- Send custom text to anyone
- Automatically adjust the volume of media on your phone.
- Play music.
In addition to these actions, you can also enable any of the following actions:
- Hear any unread texts you may have missed while at work.
- Stream “I’m On My Way Home†to all Google Home speakers in your home.
- Adjust any smart devices in your home
- Adjust the thermostat
- Adjust any smart light scenes
- Set the media volume on your phone.
Music playback is set by default, but you can change this to play any multimedia options you would like to hear on your way home.
Create custom Google Assistant actions
You can create unlimited Google Assistant routines for any opportunity. To do this, return to the main subroutine window, simply select Add Procedure to start a new custom procedure.
Your custom procedure has three parts that you can customize.
- Set the trigger to specific command words, or set the trigger to a specific day and time.
- Add all the actions that you want to take when speaking the command words.
- Add any media you want to play when you say the command words.
When you select Add Action, you can add any actions that are supported by Google Assistant’s long list of command words.
If you don’t know many of the Google Assistant commands, you can select the Browse Popular Activities tab to select one of the general commands. You will find three pages with very helpful actions that you can add to any of your own Google Assistant routines.
When you select Add Media, you can choose music, news, radio stations, podcasts, audiobooks, or sleep sounds.
Most of these will require setting up your preferred media sources from third-party sources that are compatible with Google Assistant.
If you’ve selected sleep sounds, you’ll have a list of nine pre-configured sounds, from rain and ocean to forest sounds or just white noise.
By combining any voice command with all of these actions and media, you can program Google Assistant routines to do anything for you, any time of the day.
