View, Backup, and Delete Saved Passwords in Internet Explorer

Posted on October 9, 2020 By blog_786 No Comments on View, Backup, and Delete Saved Passwords in Internet Explorer

Most web browsers allow you to store passwords for easier and faster access to websites. We found a free tool called IE PassView that makes it easy to view, back up, and delete passwords saved in Internet Explorer.

IE PassView works with Internet Explorer 4.0 and above, through Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 10.

Download IE PassView from

http: //www.nyrsoft.net/utils/internet_explorer_password.html.

You can download two versions of IE PassView. The .exe file is a complete installer with an uninstaller. The .zip file is the portable version of IE PassView.

We decided to unpack the .zip file and use the portable version. To use this version, simply double-click the iepv.exe file.

The main IE PassView window will open. All passwords that you have saved in Internet Explorer appear in a list with the website url (entry name), the type of password where the password is stored (stored in), a username / password pair, and the strength of the password.

You can select passwords from a list and save them to files of various types. To do this, select the desired passwords using the Shift and Ctrl keys to select items in the list in the same way as in Windows Explorer. Click the Save Selected Items button on the toolbar.

NOTE. You can also select items using the Select All and Deselect All options in the Edit menu.

The Select File Name to Save dialog box appears. Navigate to the folder where you want to save the file. Enter the file name in the file name edit box. Select the file type you want from the Save as type drop-down list and click Save.

NOTE. If you save passwords to a text file, the passwords appear in that file as plain text. If you are using KeePass to store passwords, you can select the KeePass csv file (* .csv) option from the Save as type drop-down list to import your password information into KeePass.

If you choose to store your passwords in a text file, we recommend protecting the file with encryption. The best option, however, is something like KeePass, which is local, or using an online password manager like LastPass.

If you left IE PassView open while using IE and saved more passwords in IE, you can refresh the list in IE PassView by clicking the Refresh button.

You can also copy the selected items to paste to another file by selecting the passwords to copy and clicking Copy Selected Items on the toolbar. This is useful if you want to store information securely in a LockNote file, as mentioned above.

NOTE. You can also choose Copy Selected Items from the Edit menu.

You can easily remove your passwords in IE by selecting the passwords you want to remove and clicking Remove Selected Items.

A confirmation dialog will open to make sure you want to delete the selected items. If you remove one password for a website, all passwords from that website will be removed. Click “Yes” if you are sure you want to remove passwords.

NOTE. If your computer is used by other people, we recommend that you delete all passwords stored in IE before allowing anyone to use your computer.

There are several parameters that you can set in IE PassView. To set these options, click the More Options button on the toolbar.

NOTE. You can also access additional options from the options menu.

The “Advanced Options” dialog box appears. You can choose to download passwords from the currently logged in user (Load passwords of the currently logged in user) or from another user (Load passwords from the next user profile). If you chose to load passwords from another user, provide the path to the user profile and the last login password for that user. Click OK.

If you have a long list of saved passwords, you can search for specific text in the list using the Find option in the Edit menu.

You can customize the display in IE PassView using the options in the View menu. The View menu also allows you to view the HTML report for all items or just selected items.

To close IE PassView, click the Exit button on the toolbar, or select Exit from the File menu.
