Create a free account

Start by creating a free account. You can register via Google, Facebook or email. After registration, you will be asked if you are creating an account for:
- Teacher
- Student
- Personal
- Small Business
- Large company
- Non-profit or charitable
You are prompted to select an option to help Canva find out which templates and designs to recommend. However, since you’re signing up for a free account, it doesn’t matter which option you choose.
By default, Canva puts you in a personal account. You can update it at any time. It’s not necessary though, because the free version has so many options and features that will allow you to create just about anything you want and publish it anywhere.
Choose your design type
Choose from a variety of image types and Canva will show you the preset dimensions for that type. You can also use custom sizes by clicking on custom size to select inches, pixels, or millimeters.
Either click Create Design and Search, or scroll through the list of options to find the one you want to use.
Another way to get started is by entering your chosen design type into the search bar or browsing the options in the control panel.
After you create a design, you can access it in the All Your Designs section.
Choose Template
Once you’ve chosen your design type, Canva takes you to its editor. For this tutorial, we’ll be using a Facebook cover. If you want to get started quickly, you can use one of the many templates provided by Canva.
The templates are also fully customizable. So, you can change the color, images, fonts, and more.
Alternatively, click the template so that it appears on the workspace. Or drag it into the editor. You can replace it at any time by clicking another thumbnail in the sidebar. Please note that any changes made to the template will be overwritten by the new one.
After choosing a template, you can format and customize elements such as photos, text, color, transparency, and background.
If you want to change an element in the template, click on it and use the toolbar. You will find it at the top of the editor.
Using Canva Editor
Inside the editor, you can create an image or customize the selected template. If you want to change the name, do so in the menu bar.
Designs are saved automatically, but you can also use the manual save option.
Inside the sidebar on the left side of the editor, you’ll find images, templates, photos, icons, illustrations, grids, and frames.
Use the text tab to add a heading, subheading, or body text. You can also add a text combination consisting of different fonts combined in a visually appealing way.
The Downloads tab will allow you to add your own images and photos. Use the folders tab to organize your images and designs.
When you click More, you will see the Canva Apps.
Design from Scratch
If you wish, you can create your design from scratch rather than using a template. First, choose a background image or color.
Add images and text to your background from the menu bar on the left side of the editor to complete the design.
When your design is ready, invite others to view or edit. Send an email invitation with your email address, or copy the link to share.
Save the image to your computer by clicking “Download” in the upper right corner. You will see several formats to choose from in the dropdown menu.
