Turn on Fast Startup Missing in Windows 8/10 Power Options?

Posted on October 9, 2020 By blog_786 1 Comment on Turn on Fast Startup Missing in Windows 8/10 Power Options?

If you have a Windows 8 or Windows 10 computer, you will definitely want to make sure your computer boots up as quickly as possible. By default, Windows 8/10 includes Fast Startup or Hybrid Shutdown, which can boot Windows 8/10 in 5 seconds on certain hardware. It essentially hibernates kernel files and device drivers.

You can check if your Windows 8/10 system is using Fast Startup by going to Control Panel, opening Power Options and clicking Choose what the power button does.

Then scroll down and you should see the Enable Fast Startup checkbox. If the options are grayed out, first try clicking the “Change settings that are not currently available” link at the top.

This should work if the option is specified. However, in some cases, you may not see the Enable Fast Startup option at all, as shown below:

In this case, it means that hibernation is not enabled on your Windows 8/10 computer. Hibernation must be enabled to return this option. You can do this by opening an elevated command prompt (click Start, type cmd, then right-click Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator) and enter the following command:

powercfg / hibernate on

That’s all. You can now take advantage of faster startup times in Windows 8/10. Enjoy!
