Troubleshooting iPhone Face ID.
Apple’s Face ID technology is pretty advanced. For the most part, it works in all conditions, even in very low light. This makes it easy to access your phone without having to remember and enter a password, like on the iPhone before it.
The technology has some limitations at the moment, so it won’t be perfect 100% of the time. However, usually, when Face ID isn’t working on your iPhone, there is a quick way to fix it.
Check Your Settings
Your settings might not be correct for using Face ID. It’s worth checking your settings first to rule this out, as there are several different areas in your iPhone’s settings where things could go wrong.
Go to Settings> Face ID & Password. At the top, you’ll see options for what your iPhone will use Face ID for. If one of them is not enabled, simply click on the switch to enable Face ID for this task.
You will also see an Attention option. When it’s on, you will need to look at your iPhone to unlock it. If it’s on and not working, your eyes may be blocking the camera somehow. You can also set an alternate look and feel that will allow your iPhone to recognize you if your look changes dramatically for any reason.
Before you decide that your Face ID is just broken, make sure all of these settings are turned on correctly. If you don’t see the settings for Face ID, then your iPhone model does not support this feature.

Make Sure Your iPhone Can See You
This may seem obvious, but sometimes your Face ID doesn’t work as expected under certain circumstances.
For example, you need to look down or hold your phone up for Face ID to work. Also, make sure you are not too far or too close to the iPhone’s camera. If your iPhone is on a flat surface, it won’t be able to recognize your face this way.
Also make sure nothing covers your face, such as clothing or accessories. If you have Attention turned on, your eyes must be visible in the same way as your face for your iPhone to identify you.
Reset Your Face ID
An easy fix might be to reset Face ID completely. If you’ve recently changed an aspect of your appearance, this could be causing problems. To do this, go back to Settings> Face ID & Passcode> Reset Face ID.
Tap on that and select Set Up Face ID. Once you’re at the Face ID setup screen, tap Get Started. You will be prompted to show your face to the iPhone camera and move it in a full circle so the iPhone can analyze and save your face.
When done, try using Face ID again to make sure it works.
Check for UpdatesÂ
Your iPhone may need to be updated for Face ID to work properly. To check if you need an update, you can go to Settings> General> Software Update.
If there is an update available, you will see a status on how to update your iPhone. Click Download and Install if you want to update.
If there is an update, it is likely that installing it will fix the Face ID issues. So be sure to check it out.
Restart Your iPhone
Sometimes just restarting the phone is enough to get rid of errors. There are two options here, either a normal restart or a full restart.
Try performing a normal restart first by holding the power button on the right side of the iPhone until the shutdown slider appears. After sliding it, wait until the screen turns off completely, about 10-20 seconds. Then press and hold the power button until the iPhone turns on.
If that doesn’t work, you can also do a hard reboot. Do this by pressing and releasing the volume up button, then the volume down button, and then press and hold the power button. When the power off slider appears, ignore it and keep holding the power button until you see the Apple logo. Then your iPhone should restart automatically.
What If None of This Worked?
If you feel like you’ve tried everything and your Face ID still isn’t working, chances are it’s really broken. This is likely a hardware issue that you cannot fix on your own. If you’ve dropped your iPhone recently, or accidentally hit something like water in it, this could be the likely cause of a malfunction.
Check if your front camera is working. It’s possible that something you can’t see is hiding it, making Face ID not working. If not, it is most likely something internal. There are several things you can do at this point.
Try resetting your iPhone to factory settings. Before doing this, make sure you have made a recent backup of your iPhone data. Then go to Settings> General> Reset> Erase All Content and Settings. You can also make a backup from here if you choose “Backup then erase”. If you’ve already taken a backup, just select “Erase Now”.
Enter your password and select Erase iPhone. It will take a little time to completely reset your iPhone, and once that happens, you can set up your Face ID again. Hopefully, it will work again by now.
If not, another option is to bring it to the Apple store. If they can’t fix it, they’ll have to send it to Apple for them to do it.
After You’ve Fixed Your iPhone Face ID
If one of these troubleshooting options worked, just keep an eye on how Face ID works from now on. Be sure to update your iPhone regularly to prevent any further problems from occurring.
Also, handle your phone carefully and carefully so that you do not accidentally drop it or get inside. This care will go a long way in keeping your Face ID and other iPhone features working for as long as possible.
