In this article, we will show you how to use Remote Desktop in Windows 10.
Requirements:
- The target computer (host) must have Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise installed.
- Remote Desktop must be enabled on the host computer.
- The remote desktop application must be installed on the local device (client). It’s available for free on the Microsoft Store, Google Play, and the Mac App Store.
- If you have an older version of Windows or a Windows IoT Enterprise client, download and install the Remote Desktop client for your system type. It is available for Windows 64-bit, Windows 32-bit, or Windows ARM64.
Enable Remote Desktop in Windows 10
To enable Remote Desktop on Windows 10:
- Select Start> Settings> System> Remote Desktop.
- Set Enable Remote Desktop to On.
- A confirmation message will appear. Select “Confirm” to proceed.
- Make a note of the PC name in the How to connect to this PC section. You will need it later when you try to connect from a client device.
- To find out who can connect to the host, go to the User Accounts section, and use the Select users who can remotely access this computer link. The “Remote Desktop Users” window opens. Administrators and all users listed here can connect to the computer.
- To add users, click the Add … button. You can only add people who have accounts on the host. However, you can create new user accounts and add them by selecting the User Account link on this window.
- After you have configured all the accounts that require remote desktop access, click OK to close this window. This gives these people remote desktop access.
Use the Remote Desktop App to Access Windows 10 Computers
The steps for using the Remote Desktop app are very similar when connecting from a Windows PC, Android or iOS device, so we’ll just look at connecting from Windows 10.
- Install the app using it. links listed at the beginning of this article.
- Open the Remote Desktop application and click the + Add button. Then select PC. You can also add a Windows workspace.
- In the PC Name field, enter the name of the host computer to which you are connecting. Then select the user account you want to use. You may need to add it by selecting the + sign and following the prompts. Now add your display name. Making multiple connections can help you distinguish them from each other. Select “Save”.

- There may be a problem with the security certificate. If you are working on your computer, this is not as important as if you were connecting to unknown computers. Choose what to do accordingly. For this example, select Don’t ask me again for this certificate and then Connect Anyway.
- Enter the password for the account you are using and select Connect.
- The first connection will take a few minutes. Be patient.
- After connecting to the host, you will see a black tab at the top middle of the screen. Selecting a menu with three dots (…) will give you the option to disconnect or establish a connection in full-screen mode.
Use the Remote Desktop Client to Access Windows 10 Computers
If you’ve used Remote Desktop on Windows Vista, 7, or 8.1, you’ll most likely need the Remote Desktop Client program. If the new remote desktop app doesn’t work for you, try the old client and vice versa. The old client still ships with Windows 10.
- Open the remote desktop client. On the start menu, it looks like the image below.
- Select Show Options to access all of the Remote Desktop settings.
- You will see the General, Display Ads, Local Resources, Experience, and Advanced tabs. Each of them offers several settings for configuring Remote Desktop Connection. We will focus on the General tab. The defaults on other tabs are usually okay.
Enter the name of the host computer in Computer: and Username: required. To make it easier to connect, you can check the box Allow me to save credentials. It’s not obligatory. Then select “Save As …” to create a shortcut for easy connection. Follow the prompts to keep the connection.

Select Connect to connect to the host.
- You may be asked if you trust this remote connection. If you are working on your computer, this is not as important as if you were connecting to unknown computers. Choose what to do accordingly. For this example, select Don’t ask me again for this certificate and then Connect. Please note that you can copy and paste data between the client computer and the host using the clipboard.
- The first connection may take a minute.
- Enter your password in the Enter Credentials window. Make sure the “Remember me” checkbox is checked. Click OK and you will connect to the host computer.
- Notice the blue stripe at the top center of the window. Click the signal bar icon to check the quality of the connection. This step is optional, but can be helpful in troubleshooting performance issues. To log out of the session, log out of Windows on the host.
