The splitting method the screen in Windows 10

The splitting method the screen in Windows 10 or How to split-screen in Windows 10.

Windows 10 has many features to help you be more productive. One of them is the ability to split-screen in Windows 10 with minimal effort.

As with most Windows 10 features, there are several ways to do the same. The approach you take depends on whether you prefer to use a keyboard or mouse.

Let’s take a look at ways to split the screen in Windows 10, as well as third-party apps that can help you do it more gracefully.

Also, watch our YouTube video on our web site where we show you the different options so you can watch it in action.

How to Split the Screen in Windows 10

The fastest way to split a screen is to take one window and slide it to one edge of the screen (left or right). This will automatically resize the window to only fill half of the screen.

On the other half of the screen, you will see all currently open windows. You can choose one to fill the other half of the screen.

Split your screen in just a few clicks. You can still resize these windows if you want them to occupy three-quarters of the screen. You are not limited to splitting the screen in half.

If you prefer to use the keyboard for this:

  1. Select the first window, then press the Windows key.
  2. Press the left or right arrow key.
  3. This will fill the left or right half of the screen with the window of your choice.
  4. Repeat this process for the second window, but choose a different left or right key to fill the other half of the screen.

How to Split Your Screen into Four Windows

You are also not limited to a 50/50 split screen. You can split the screen in four ways, combining the above process with a second click of the up or down arrow.

This is how it works.

Repeat the above process, but after pressing the Left key, follow it with the up or down arrow key to move the window to the top or bottom corner of that side of the screen.

Repeat this with additional screens by pressing Windows-Left-Down, Windows-Right-Up, and Windows-Right-Down to fill in other corners of the screen.

Note. This four-window feature only works with the 2020 update for Windows 10, so make sure you install the latest Windows updates if that doesn’t work for you.

How to Enable Windows Snap Assist

If you find that Windows Snap Assist is not working at all for you and you are sure to have the latest Windows updates installed, you may need to enable Snap Assist.

To turn on Windows Snap Assist:

  1. Select the Start menu and type Settings, then select the Settings app.
  2. Select the System icon and then select Multitasking from the left menu.
  3. Make sure the Window Snap radio button is on and the three checkboxes below it are on.

Once enabled, all of the Windows Snap features listed above should work as described.

Use Third-Party Apps to Split Screen in Windows 10

Before Microsoft updated Windows Snap Assist with additional features (such as allowing windows to split into four quadrants), there were many applications that provided this feature.

Many of these apps are really no longer needed, but some do extend functionality beyond what Windows 10 Snap Assist currently offers.

Below are some of the more useful apps you can use to split your screen more creatively.

1. GridMove

When you install GridMove, it mainly enhances Windows Snap’s help by allowing you to choose from different templates for snap regions.

Once installed, just right-click the application icon in the taskbar and select Templates to see a list of templates from which you can choose.

When you move the window to any edge of the screen, the GridMove takes over and displays an orange grid. Just paste a window into any of these fields and it will fill it to the brim.

You can repeat this for any number of windows until all of the GridMove fields are filled.

GridMove also works on multiple monitors, so you will see the available margins on all screens that you can move the window to.

2. AquaSnap

The AquaSnap multitasking app offers many useful Windows Snap features included in its free version.

Install the app and an icon will appear in the lower right corner of the taskbar. Right-click the icon to go to the settings area.

You can change a lot about how windows look (transparent or otherwise) and how windows will snap when you adjust them to any edge of the screen.

However, by default, the application does its job well. Just take any window you want to anchor and slide it to any edge or corner of the screen.

You will see a small icon showing how the window snapping will take place. Corners snap the window to the quarter in that corner of the screen. Side or top anchors fill that half of the screen with this window.

This saves a bit of time compared to the Windows variant as you don’t need to use any keyboard keys. In addition, adjusting screen angles requires only one mouse movement, rather than multiple mouse movements and keyboard clicks.

Split Screen in Windows 10 However You Like

The apps listed above are two free apps that can enhance the Instant Help feature in Windows 10. Most of the other apps on the market are not free, and for most people, the extra features aren’t really worth the extra cost.

Whichever approach you choose, learning how to snap windows to the edges or corners of the screen can greatly improve your productivity. It allows you to monitor multiple online applications, compare data, or perform multiple tasks at the same time, which would be impossible without this feature.

So, try Windows Snap Assist, and if it’s not good enough, install free apps and run them to make sure they do what you want them to do. And if you don’t like Snap Assist at all, you can turn it off.
