The five best download managers for Chrome and Firefox 2023.
DownThemAll has over 2.5 million active users. With the release of the tangibly fast Firefox 57, better known as Firefox Quantum, users have long hoped for an upgrade. Its main feature was the ability to download files in parts and resume downloading even after interruptions. Months pass and the developers do not report a possible solution, and it’s time to look for alternatives.

Update: DownThemAll WebExtension is now available for Firefox
DownThemAll is back on the Firefox Add-ons website. However, as our friends at Ghacks have pointed out, it is not as powerful as the old version. For example, while you can still download multiple files from sites, the new version is missing features like sharded download, conflict handling or rate limiting, etc. This is likely due to Firefox’s limiting API. It is still only available for Firefox.
1. Download Star
Download Star is compatible with Firefox 48 or later, up to 57 and later. Download Star works very much like DownThemAll did. When you load a page with multimedia data such as videos, audio files, images or files, it analyzes the site for their presence.
Then you click on the add-on icon in the toolbar to open a sorted list of file types, including HTML. Just check the box for the type of file you want to download and the addon will filter out everything else. Then you can download them all in one go.
There is also a search button in case you know the names of the files you want to download. You can choose more than 1 file type. You can resolve conflicting options, such as overwrite, rename, or skip.
Verdict. While Download Star is a cool little add-on that offers a lot of features, some are missing, such as the ability to pause and resume downloads. It is not possible to configure the addon, so you cannot decide how many concurrent downloads the addon will handle. You can download only from the active tab, and not from all open tabs.
2. Video Download Assistant
Video DownloadHelper is a very popular video download add-on that supports a number of sites and formats. Unlike Download Star and some other add-ons, the Video DownloadHelper icon in the toolbar starts spinning when it detects media that you can download.
Apart from supporting a range of video formats and images, the addon really excels in one specific area. If there is a video that the addon cannot load, it will allow you to take a screenshot on the fly and create a video from it. This means that you can also record your browsing sessions, which can come in very handy when you want to show someone how to do something. There is an additional function for highlighting the position of the mouse. Some other features include the ability to convert videos and join them.
There are preference options where you can customize the appearance, behavior of the add-in, such as concurrent downloads, file name and length, and conversion rules. To be honest, it had more options and settings, over 30, then I knew what to do with them.
Verdict: Video DownloadHelper is a cool little addon that will download almost anything you want. During my test, it was unable to get all images like Download Star, but it worked well with videos. Plus, you can customize it flawlessly.

3. Internet Download Manager
Internet Download Manager is a separate software that you download and install on your computer. Next, you will need to install a Firefox browser add-on that connects the two, allowing downloads from Firefox to be transferred to IDM.
IDM is free to try for 30 days, after which you can buy it for $ 29.95. Despite its high cost, IDM has become a favorite among those who constantly download this or that file.
IDM is noticeably faster than most download managers without even affecting your normal browsing speed. Since it is a standalone program, you can pause and resume downloads just like DownThemAll, since Firefox web extension API does not affect it. It can handle almost any type of file and comes with a scheduler, so you can start downloading at a predetermined date and time, and then it can shut down your computer as well.

Verdict: IDM is paid software, but the feature set justifies the price. Not only is it a great alternative to DownThemAll, but better in many ways. The developers update it every 6 weeks and it is known to be safe and reliable.

4. Jdownloader
JDownloader is a great replacement for IDM. It’s free and open source. It has many features such as the ability to start, stop and pause downloads, download files using multiple connections, and automatically extract files.
IDM still has a lot to offer, but for a price. JDownloader comes with a scheduler and a remote control that handles HTTP requests.
Verdict: Jdownloader is an easy-to-use download manager that is free and is a perfect replacement for DownThemAll as well as IDM. It is available for Windows, Linux and Mac.

5. Free download manager
Another free download manager, FDM, comes with BitTorrent support. This means that you can download files via torrent. You can easily download anything in parts, pause and resume downloads at any time, and schedule and manage files. Torrents really make life easier.
Under the GNU license, it comes with a site explorer that will allow you to explore the folder structure of the source site. Other than that, there are many ways to customize it to your liking.
Verdict: FDM works very much like JDownloader, with the added support of BitTorrent client, which makes managing and downloading files much easier and faster.

6. Chrono Download Manager
As far as Chrome permissions go, things are not so relaxed. This is why it was difficult to find a Chrome add-on that could act as an alternative to DownThemAll Chrome. The closest I could find was Chrono Download Manager.
Chrono Download Manager detects different file types for audio, video and images, and also allows you to filter these results by file type.
Chrono Download Manager works fine and I was able to resume the download after pausing it twice.
Verdict: Chrono Download Manager is a good alternative to DownThemAll, where you can filter file types, rename downloaded files and manage downloads in a separate tab.

Convolution: DownThemAll Alternative Download Manager
If you find yourself downloading, uh, everything from the Internet all the time, I suggest Internet Download Manager. It is paid, but you will always get updates and support, and also because it works independently of the browser and you have nothing to worry about.
