Stop a Website from Sending Notifications in Chrome

Google Chrome is almost universally recognized as the best browser for desktop and laptop users. If you were 10 years ago, shortly after the release of Chrome, Firefox was still the throne. Going back 10 years ago, Internet Explorer was ahead of Netscape. How quickly things change, right?

Turning back the clock, browsers weren’t as loud as they are today. Toolbars existed then, but plugins and extensions are more powerful than ever. Your browser can do many interesting things for you today, including notifying you for almost any purpose you can think of.

However, functionality at this level can often be created by a loud browser. As your browser user profile is extended and you visit more websites, your notifications can get a little hectic. If you’ve ever downloaded Google Chrome for a long list of notification events since it was last closed, you know what I mean!

So how do we get our browser back and silenced again? In this article, let’s talk about how to prevent a website from sending notifications in Google Chrome. But first, let’s find out more about them.

What are Chrome notifications?

Sometimes you come across a website that asks for your permission to send notifications.

This prompt appears right below the address bar in Chrome, above the bookmarks bar (if enabled). Sometimes it pops up completely by accident and without a prompt – usually in this case it is better to close the prompt or block them. However, sometimes you see this prompt when you try to enable a specific feature on a website.

Chrome uses what are called toast notifications. Toast is a modeless, unobtrusive window element that displays text before it automatically expires. They have become very popular lately, but Windows tooltips were often used before them.

Chrome toast notifications can be very reliable. These can include an image, text, icon, action buttons, and more.

An example of a web service that makes good use of Chrome’s notification system is Keepa Keepa allows you to track product prices on Amazon and alert you when they hit a certain threshold. In Google Chrome, users can choose to receive a notification when this happens.

How to prevent a website from sending Chrome notifications

You may find yourself in a situation where you have turned on notifications for a website that turned out to be quite annoying. Instead of going to a website and relying on the fact that they have a built-in way to turn off their notifications, you can go straight to Google Chrome settings to control this.

The first step is to access the Google Chrome settings by going into the settings menu.

Scroll down the page and click Advanced. The first table you should see is called Privacy and Security.

In this table, click the Site Settings row. You will be taken to a page with a similar table, where you will find and click “Notifications”.

This is a variant of the fifth row from the top.

On the next page, you will have a list of all domains for which you have allowed or blocked notifications. To block notifications from a website where you previously allowed them, click on the hamburger menu icon and select “Block”. You can do the same for blocked notifications that you want to allow by choosing Allow instead.

To the left of the hamburger menu icon for each blocked and allowed domain will be an icon with an arrow pointing to the right. By clicking on it, you can delete data from this website, reset all permissions completely, or reset every single permission. These permissions include settings for your location, camera, microphone, sound, and Flash resolution in Chrome.

While it’s hidden deep in Chrome’s settings, you can finally get your silent browser back by following this guide! Don’t worry if you accidentally allow or block a website to send notifications – you can always undo this by following these steps.
