Aero Glass in Windows 7 and Vista can look nice, but it can also slow down computers that don’t have powerful video adapters. If your computer’s performance is adversely affected by Aero Glass, you can speed up Windows and still enjoy Aero features such as Flip 3D and taskbar thumbnails. The transparency of the glass can be turned off.
This article shows you how to do this on Windows 7 and Vista. The procedure is slightly different on each system.
Windows 7
The next Windows Explorer window shows the Aero Glass transparency effect in Windows 7. You will notice that the Windows logo on the desktop can be seen through the window border.
To turn off Aero Glass transparency in Windows 7, right-click an empty area of ??the desktop and choose Personalize from the pop-up menu.

The personalization screen on the control panel is displayed. Click the Window Color link under the themes.
In the Window Color and Appearance screen, select the Enable Transparency check box to make it NOT checked.
Click Save Changes to save your settings and close the Window Color and Appearance screen.
To close the control panel, click the X button in the upper right corner of the window.
Now window borders are opaque.
Windows Vista
Here is an example of a Windows Explorer window in Windows Vista with Aero Glass transparency enabled.
To turn off Aero Glass transparency in Windows Vista, right-click an empty area of ??the desktop and choose Personalize from the pop-up menu.
The personalization screen on the control panel is displayed. Click the Window Color and Appearance link.
In the Window Color and Appearance screen, select the Enable Transparency check box to make it NOT checked.
Click OK to close the Window Color and Appearance screen.
To close the control panel, click the X button in the upper right corner of the window.
Window borders are no longer transparent.
If you don’t mind ditching some of the quirky elements of the Aero Glass feature, you can improve your system’s performance. As we mentioned earlier, you still have access to the functionalities of Aero.
