Shark Wandvac Self-Empty System Vacuum Review. If you live in an apartment where there is no storage space for a full-sized upright vacuum cleaner, cleaning up the space can be a challenge. Especially if you are a dog or cat owner! If your home also has a lot of hard-to-reach corners, that rules out most robot vacuums as well. If this all sounds familiar, try the Shark Wandvac Self-Emptying System as your cleaning tool. In this vacuum cleaner review, we’ll take a look at this powerful and lightweight cordless vacuum cleaner and share our test results so you can decide if this vacuum cleaner fits your home cleaning needs.
Shark Wandvac Self-Empty System: First Impressions & Specs
Shark is a famous brand in the world of vacuum cleaners. Shark vacuum cleaners are often compared to some of the most popular vacuum cleaners on the market, such as Dyson vacuum cleaners. The Shark Wandvac is designed to be a lightweight cordless vacuum cleaner that empties itself. So if you’re the type who regularly forgets to empty your vacuum cleaner’s trash can (or maybe you’re like me and just don’t like doing it), the Shark self-cleaning system is the perfect find for you. The system takes care of this part of the maintenance and you always have a vacuum cleaner ready to start cleaning the house. Another obvious advantage of this vacuum cleaner is that it is cordless and ultra-light. I used to have several handheld vacuum cleaners that were too heavy to finish cleaning in one go. The Shark Wandvac system weighs 13.85 pounds (6.3 kg) including the charging base (which you don’t have to move while cleaning). The vacuum cleaner itself transforms from an upright stick to a floor vacuum cleaner to a small handheld vacuum cleaner weighing only 2.1 lbs (0.9 kg) that can be used to quickly clean up liquid spills without any effort. Before we get into talking about the design and performance of the Shark vacuum cleaner, here is a list of specifications for this cordless vacuum cleaner.

Design and Unpacking
Shark Wandvac is delivered disassembled, all parts are assembled in one box. With everything out of the box, you can either use the quick cordless vacuum cleaner assembly guide, or you can do it without any instructions. The whole system is intuitive. I assembled the Shark Wandvac in minutes without looking at the manual.
What’s in the box
Here’s what you’ll find in the box when you unpack your Shark Wandvac Self-Empty System:
- Shark Wandvac Self-Empty System
- Self-Cleaning Charging Base with HEPA Filter and Quiet Mode li>
- Duster crevice tool
- Pet tool
- Quick start guide and user manual
From the very beginning, I recommend doing one thing that will improve the appearance of your Shark Wandvac vacuum cleaner – remove all labels that you find on it. The labels are well thought out. Each of them helps to assemble and get acquainted with the operation of the vacuum cleaner, but spoils the overall appearance of the gadget. I believe labels should be removed after (or even before) first use. The Shark Wandvac feels well built and not flimsy. The body of the vacuum cleaner, as well as the charging dock, are made of durable hard plastic. All parts fit together easily and don’t feel like they will break easily if you drop them. The smaller part of the vacuum cleaner, the ergonomic handheld vacuum cleaner, is very light and comfortable.
The charging base does not take up too much space, so you can find a corner to hide it, even in a small apartment. The whole unit, together with the vacuum cleaner, also does not take up much space, so you will not have problems storing it in a limited space. In addition, it looks stylish and modern. In any case, it will complement your apartment.
The back of the charging dock has an accessory storage area where you can attach one of your accessories – a crevice duster or a multi-tool.
One thing that frustrated me is the power cord, which I felt was too short for my apartment. You will probably need to find a place for the charging station next to the plug so that the charger can easily reach the wall. Alternatively, you will have to use an extension cord like I did.On the other hand, if you place the dock too close to a power outlet and don’t want the charging cord to be visible, you can wrap the extra cord around the cord connector at the bottom of the dock’s base.On the handle of the vacuum cleaner, right below the power button, you will find three bright LEDs. These indicators show how much battery power is left in your vacuum cleaner. When the vacuum cleaner is fully charged, three indicators light up, two indicators indicate the average level of charge and one indicator indicates that about 30% of the charge remains. When the indicator starts flashing, you will know that it is time to pause cleaning and charge the Shark Wandvac handheld vacuum cleaner.
Cleaning Performance
I have found the Shark Wandvac self-emptying system to be a great help around the house. We tested the vacuum cleaner on hard floors and it had no problem picking up large debris and fine dust. We don’t have carpet at home, but a test we did on a couch showed that this vacuum cleaner can work on a variety of different types of surfaces. However, before you start cleaning, you need to collect the Shark Wandvac vacuum cleaner and put it on charge.
Installation process
Once you take the cordless handheld vacuum cleaner out of the box, you will need to go through the setup process before you can start cleaning. Luckily, Shark Wandvac is easy to assemble and only takes a few minutes of your time. To assemble the vacuum cleaner, connect the nozzle to the main brush nozzle, and then connect the handheld vacuum cleaner to the nozzle. When you put each piece in place, you will hear a distinctive click. To assemble the docking station, insert the charging stand into the slot at the top of the charging base until it clicks into place. Then place the vacuum cleaner on the dock in a downward motion. You’ll know it’s properly attached when you hear the emptying of the dust bin begin (it’s quite loud so you won’t miss it). Make sure you fully charge your Shark Wandvac before using it for the first time. This should take about 3 hours.
Vacuum
Thanks to the various accessories included in the kit, you can use the Shark Wandvac system to clean your apartment in many different ways. If you prefer vertical stick mode, you can leave the PowerFins floor nozzle on for deeper floor cleaning. Or you can ditch the wand and switch to handheld vacuuming mode with the accessory of your choice. In our experience, the PowerFins nozzle is best suited for general floor cleaning. The suction power is enough to remove all the garbage in the apartment. We also tested it at our neighbor’s who has a huge dog hair problem and it did a great job there too. The self-cleaning roller should really work, as we never ran into any wraps or hair traps during testing.
The crevice cloth is ideal for cleaning any hard-to-reach places in your apartment. In my experience, it was the cobweb on the ceiling of our mezzanine that I kept looking at but couldn’t get to. The Shark Wandvac + rag slit did a great job of putting it all together for me.
Designed for cleaning pet hair and upholstery, this multi-tool is great for cleaning your car. The Shark Wandvac is probably one of the best cordless car vacuum cleaners due to its portability and lightweight design. Detach the handheld vacuum cleaner from the wand and carry it around in your car without worrying about the power cord getting in the way. You can use both accessories to clean the interior of the car and to get into tight corners.
In addition to cleaning the car, I found that this handheld vacuum did a great job on furniture, dusty window sills, bookshelves, and stairs. In other words, all those places that a standard vacuum cleaner can hardly reach. The manual part of the Shark Wandvac system has a dust container that you can empty manually or let the vacuum cleaner do it automatically once you place the vacuum cleaner back on the charging dock. The dust collector has a small volume of 0.12 liters. When you slide the release button forward, the dust cap will open.
Self-cleaning process
If you don’t like to empty your vacuum cleaner’s dustbin yourself, the Shark Wandvac self-cleaning system can do it for you. After cleaning, place the vacuum cleaner on the charging dock until it clicks. As soon as it is attached, you will hear the auto-evacuation process begin. The self-emptying process is quite loud (surprisingly not as loud as the auto-emptying on the Botslab S8 Plus), but only lasts 10 seconds. If you need the vacuum cleaner to work quietly, you can temporarily disable the automatic emptying process. To do this, press the mute button on the charging dock. Quiet Mode is perfect for when you don’t want to disturb other people or pets in the house.
The best part about the auto cleaning feature is that you can forget about those nasty dust clouds when you manually empty the vacuum cleaner’s dust box. Wandvac automatically removes fine dust, debris and allergens into a sealed system with HEPA filtration.
Short runtime
When I first used this vacuum cleaner, I thought it was too good to be true. And then I noticed that after about 12 minutes of operation, the LED indicator began to flash, reminding me that I need to put the vacuum cleaner on charge. The next time I used Wandvac, I managed to squeeze a full 15 minutes out of it, but that was the maximum. To be honest, I only have two small rooms, and I have time to clean before the battery runs out. But if you have a large house, this vacuum cleaner will not be enough for serious cleaning. The Shark Wandvac is ideal for a quick clean, but not for a full house cleaning.
Battery Life
The Shark Wandvac self-emptying system comes pre-installed with lithium-ion batteries. You will need about 3.5 hours to fully charge the vacuum cleaner from scratch.Shark claims the device will run for 17 minutes on a full charge, but remember that you can only achieve these results with a handheld vacuum cleaner. When you attach the handset and floor nozzle, the time is shortened by a few minutes, further shortening the already short battery life.Like all lithium-ion products, battery capacity naturally decreases over time. However, the Wandvac system comes with a lengthy 5 year limited warranty, a 2 year battery warranty and a 60 day money back guarantee. If the battery fails during the warranty period, you can request a free replacement.
Should You Buy the Shark Wandvac Self-Empty System?
Shark Wandvac Self-Empty System is the perfect vacuum cleaner for those who live in a small apartment, do not like to manually empty the dust container of a vacuum cleaner and need a versatile cleaning tool that can handle a variety of surfaces.Add in the lightness and portability factor and you have a definite yes on whether or not you should buy this vacuum for your home. The only real downside to this cleaning beast is the short run time, so I wouldn’t recommend using it as your main vacuum cleaner for a large home. And if you’re looking for a fully automated cleaning option, consider getting a robotic vacuum cleaner that does all the house cleaning for you.
