iOS is stable, but even a stable operating system can succumb to random bugs, crashes, and other software-related issues. As with any other desktop or mobile device, restarting your iPhone is often the best way to fix a problem.
A soft reset clears the iPhone’s system cache and provides a great starting point for additional troubleshooting. Read on to learn about multiple ways to restart any iOS device.
Why You Should Restart Your iPhone
Restarting your iPhone can solve a lot of issues that prevent the device from working properly. For example, you can try if:
iOS is slow and sluggish.Apps are not responding or not working as expected.Apps take too long to download or update, freeze, or fail .You can’t update your system software.You can’t connect to the Internet.Your Apple ID or iCloud account isn’t syncing.
Don’t restart your iPhone for no reason. iOS generally does a great job keeping everything in top condition and you can go months without rebooting your device.
Restart the iPhone Through the iOS Settings App
There is a dedicated Power Off option in the Settings app on your iPhone that you can use to turn off and restart your device. It is available on all iOS devices, including iPad.
1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone. If you can’t find it, swipe down from the top of the home screen to trigger search. Then try to find it.
2. Tap the General category.
3. Scroll down the General screen and tap Shut down.
4. Click and drag the power icon to the right.
5. When the iPhone screen turns off, wait at least 30 seconds.
6. Hold down the power button. You can find it on the right side of the device (iPhone 6 and later) or at the top (iPhone 5 and later).
7. Release the power button when you see the Apple logo.
8. Enter your device passcode on the lock screen to unlock iPhone and restore Face ID or Touch ID.
Restart iPhone Using Device-Specific Button Presses
Apart from the above method, you can use the following device-specific instructions to reset your iPhone. The process depends on whether you are using an iPhone with Face ID or Touch ID.
Reboot iPhone with Face ID
If you’re using an iPhone with Face ID, you can press the Volume buttons and the Sleep/Wake button on the device in sequence to access the Slide to Power Off screen. Then just turn off the device and boot it up again.
The following steps apply to the following iPhone models with Face ID:

1. Immediately press and release the volume up button.
2. Immediately press and release the volume down button.
3. Immediately press and hold the Sleep/Wake (side) button until the Power Off Slide screen appears.
4. Click and drag the power icon to the right.
5. When the screen turns off, wait at least 30 seconds.
6. Hold down the side button until you see the Apple logo.
7. Enter your device passcode to go to the home screen.
Advice. You can also get to the Slide to Power Off screen by pressing and holding the volume up and side buttons. Release the buttons immediately to avoid automatic emergency calls.
Reboot iPhone with Touch ID
Rebooting an iPhone 6 or newer iPhone using Touch ID is much easier than a device with Face ID.
The following steps apply to the following iPhone models with a physical home button:
iPhone 6 | iPhone 6 plus | iPhone 6s | iPhone 6s PlusiPhone 7 | iPhone 7 PlusiPhone 8 | iPhone 8 PlusiPhone SE (1st generation) | iPhone SE (2nd generation) | iPhone SE (3rd generation)
1. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake (side) button until the Power Off Slide screen appears.
2. Drag the Power Off slider to the right.
3. When the iPhone screen turns off, wait at least 30 seconds.
4. Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
5. Enter your password to go to the home screen.
Reboot iPhone 5s and earlier.
You can restart an older iPhone, such as an iPhone 5s or earlier, by following the same steps for newer Touch ID devices. However, on these devices, the Sleep/Wake button is located in the upper right corner.
Restart iPhone Using AssistiveTouch
AssistiveTouch is an accessibility related feature that can help you restart your iPhone without having to press any buttons. Follow the steps below to activate and use AssistiveTouch to restart your iOS device.
1. Open the Settings app and go to Accessibility > Touchscreen > AssistiveTouch.
2. Turn on the switch next to AssistiveTouch.
3. Touch the floating AssistiveTouch icon and select Device > More > Restart.
Note. AssistiveTouch offers many options to help you perform everyday tasks such as activating the app switcher, taking screenshots, performing gestures, and more. You can keep or turn off this feature after you restart your iPhone.
