If you use a lot of numbers in Word documents and want to be able to spell them quickly, there is a Word add-in that makes this easy.
There is an Excel version of this add-in that installs and works the same as the Word version. This post shows you how to install and use the Word version, but the steps can be applied to the Excel version as well.
Both versions have been tested in Microsoft Word for Windows versions 2000, 2002 (XP), 2003, 2007, and 2010.

To install Popup SpellNumber for Word, double-click the downloaded .exe file.
An introductory dialog is displayed. Click “Continue”.
A Word document opens with a description of the add-in and buttons for installing and uninstalling the add-in and exiting the installation. Click Install.
NOTE. Since this file allows you to uninstall the add-on, we recommend that you keep the downloaded .exe file in case you decide to uninstall the add-on in the future.
The “Install” dialog box appears. This dialog box basically warns you that you need to grant administrative permission to install the add-in and that the User Account Control dialog box will open. Click OK.
The User Account Control dialog box is displayed only if the required level is set in the User Account Control settings. See our Windows publication – How to Configure UAC (User Account Control) for more information on changing User Account Control settings. If necessary, click “Yes” to continue.
The “Install as COM Add-in” dialog box appears. We accepted the default installation location and chose to install for all users. Click “Continue”.
The license agreement is displayed. Read it and click OK to continue.
When the installation is complete, the “Installed Successfully” dialog box appears. It explains how to access the SpellNumber add-in in Word. Click OK.
Open Word and enter a decimal number such as 5.67. Highlight the number and right-click the selection. Select SpellNumber from the pop-up menu.
The SpellNumber for Word dialog box opens. You have several options for setting the number. For example, use the Letter Case drop-down list to specify how, if any, words in a written number are capitalized.
Use the Singular Units drop-down list to specify how the units will be written, depending on what type of amount the number should represent. To add more options, select the Modify Suggestions option.
If you selected the “Edit Offers” option, the “Edit Offers” dialog box opens. Add additional parameters to the edit box, separating each parameter with a semicolon (;). At the very least, a percentage is required plus one more option.
To access additional options, click the More Options button.
The Plural Units drop-down list is similar to the Singular Units drop-down list, allowing you to specify how the plural units should be written for the amount entered. If you want to write “one thousand†instead of “thousand†and not just “thousandâ€, select “True†from the “One thousand†drop-down list.
To insert commas between thousands, hundreds of thousands, etc., select True from the Thousands of Commas drop-down list.
Click the green OK button to copy the dialed number to the clipboard and close the SpellNumber for Word dialog box.
You can also copy the entered number to the clipboard without closing the dialog box. To do this, click the Copy to Windows Clipboard without closing button. It looks like a regular “Copy” button.
To restore the default settings, click the Default button.
The red square button and the four green square buttons around it let you indicate where you want to insert the prefixed number in relation to the current selection in the Word document. The red button will replace the selected text in your document. Green buttons indicate the corresponding positions around the selected text.
We decided to apply the case of the heading to our prescribed number using the Letter case drop-down list and insert it under the selected text by clicking the green button under the red button.
You can also open the SpellNumber dialog for Word without highlighting any text and enter the number you want to write directly into the Number edit box. Then you can select settings and copy the number as described above.
You can use SpellNumber for Word to copy the dialed number to the clipboard and paste it into any other Windows application that accepts text using Copy to Windows Clipboard without the close button mentioned earlier in this post.
Remember, the steps in this post can also be applied to SpellNumber for Excel.
