Prevent a Mouse or USB Device from Waking Windows from Sleep Mode

Posted on October 6, 2020 By blog_786 No Comments on Prevent a Mouse or USB Device from Waking Windows from Sleep Mode

One of the best power management features in Windows is hibernation, a convenient way to save power and reduce wear and tear on your PC’s hardware when not in use. Typically, the default mouse and keyboard wakes Windows from sleep.

This is not a problem for most people, but may cause problems for some people with a very sensitive mouse. Even minor vibration can cause Windows to wake up from sleep mode. Luckily, you can easily disable your mouse or any other USB device from Windows wake-up.

In this article, I’ll show you how to change your mouse or USB device’s power settings so they don’t interfere with Windows sleep. I just use the keyboard to wake my computer up from sleep, so I don’t have to worry about pressing the power button.

Stop the mouse from waking the computer

To get started, go to Control Panel and click. If you’re in Category View, click Hardware and Sound, and then click Mouse under Devices and Printers.

In the Mouse Properties window, click the Hardware tab and select the mouse from the list of devices. Typically only one mouse will be listed here, but this will depend on the hardware you have connected to your computer. With the mouse selected from the list, click the Properties button.

In the second Properties window for your mouse, click the Change Settings button on the General tab.

Finally, go to the Power Management tab and uncheck the box next to Allow this device to wake the computer from sleep. Click OK, and then click OK on all other open windows. From now on, you cannot wake Windows from sleep by clicking the mouse button or moving the mouse.

Some high-performance mice, such as gaming mice, have a high polling rate and high resolution, which means that even the slightest movement will be detected and wake up your computer. Correcting this setting will prevent this. Note that you can also get to this option by clicking the Start button and typing in Device Manager.

Expand Mice and Other Pointing Devices, then right-click and select Properties.

This will take you to the same dialog box with the Power Management tab as shown above. To prevent other USB devices from waking your computer from sleep mode, simply right-click them, select Properties and go to the Power tab. For example, you can also prevent your keyboard from waking your computer or network card from sleep mode.

If you have a wireless keyboard / mouse and a USB transmitter is connected to your computer, you also need to disable this option for that device. It should appear in the Keyboards section. If nothing appears except the HID Keyboard Device, just disable it for that too.

Missing Power Management tab

In some cases, you may not see the Power Management tab for some or all of your USB devices. In addition, sometimes the “Allow this device to wake the computer” box is grayed out and you cannot install or remove it.

If you do not have the Power Management tab or the field is grayed out, you need to go to your computer’s BIOS and make sure it supports USB Wake-up. This can usually be determined if it is possible to enable USB Wake Support or enable a sleep state above S1 (usually S3). The BIOS parameter may be called ACPI Suspend Type.

You can also see some of the options under Configuring Wake Event related to resuming from S3 / S4 / S5 using mouse / keyboard / USB device. Make sure they are all on.
