Overview of indoor and outdoor CCTV cameras LaView.Overview of indoor and outdoor CCTV cameras LaView.
LaView is an American security technology company. They sell a whole family of security products, from fully wired multi-camera security systems to smart wireless cameras that require nothing more than an active Wi-Fi network.
The market for wireless security camera solutions is rapidly evolving as most people prefer the ability to simply set up a camera, connect it to their home wireless network, and start surveillance inside and outside their home.
In this review, we will take a look at two such LaView indoor and outdoor surveillance cameras: the R3 PT indoor wireless surveillance camera and the R12 1080P outdoor wireless surveillance camera.
Mounting the R3 PT Indoor Wireless Security Camera
The R3 PT indoor security camera comes in a simple plastic casing that contains all the parts you need to install and configure the camera.
Package includes:
- HD 1080P CCTV camera with 355-degree pan and tilt function, which can be remotely controlled from your smartphone.
- 6ft USB port cable with standard 120V to USB adapter.
- Quick start guide and a quick reference card with all features.
- Mounting screws and anchors for drywall.
- 3M double-sided adhesive pad for mounting on flat surfaces.
Here are the features you can expect when purchasing an R3 PT indoor security camera:
- Record and playback high definition 1080P video (to phone).
- Remote control panorama 355 degrees and tilt from -10 to 75 degrees.
- IR night vision up to 25 feet (enough to cover most rooms).
- Conversations on the phone with someone in the room using the mobile app.
- MicroSD card support for local storage of videos or photos (not included).
- Push notifications to your phone when motion or sound is detected.
Push notifications are optional. You can turn off motion or sound detection, or schedule it to activate only at specific times of the day or night.
Taking a closer look at the camera itself, you will see that the 1080P camera itself is mounted on a black rotating wheel, and the microphone is separated from it on the same wheel, about 30 degrees apart.
If you turn the camera over, you will see that the micro-USB connector is located inside a notch, which allows you to route the USB power cable under the mounting plate.
The mounting plate itself requires a quick turn (no screws) to attach to the bottom of the camera. If you plan to secure the camera with screws, you should wait before attaching it to the camera.
If you would like to use the sticky pad instead, attach the mounting plate, peel off one side of the sticky pad, and attach it to the mounting plate as shown here.
Ideally, if you intend to mount the camera upside-down, you should use screws for a more secure mount. However, during testing, we found that the 3M adhesive pad was strong enough to hold the lightweight camera in place even when upside down.
However, you should be aware that it may fall over time if you do not use the screws in this position.
The camera can be mounted upside down, as shown below, or on top of a desk, such as the top of a dresser in a kid’s room, or anywhere else, but from a good vantage point for the room you want to observe. …
You should also purchase wall cable clamps to hold the cable against the wall to the point where it is plugged into the wall outlet. This will provide a cleaner mount. Or, if it’s mounted on a dresser or other surface against a wall, you can also simply drape the cable behind the furniture.
If you only purchased the R3 PT and want to know how to set it up using LaView, you can skip the next section.
Mounting the R12 Outdoor Wireless Security Camera
Since the software installation for both cameras is identical, we will first walk through the unboxing and installation of the R12 outdoor wireless surveillance camera.
You will receive the R12 Outdoor Security Camera in a box that contains all the parts you need to install and turn it on.
Package includes:
- HD 1080P CCTV camera with 360-degree horizontal tilt and 110-degree vertical tilt, which you can remotely control from your smartphone.
- A 10ft USB power cable with a standard 120V to USB adapter.
- User Guide and Quick Start Guide.
- Mounting screws and anchors for drywall.
Here are the features you can expect when you buy an R3 PT indoor security camera:
Installing the camera is extremely easy, but before you start, you should know that the device has a network port if you are looking for a more secure wired solution. This is ideal for situations where you cannot get a good Wi-Fi signal outside where you want to install the camera.
You don’t need anything more than a screwdriver to install the camera (or a drill if the wood you are screwing into is very hard).
Simply screw the Wi-Fi antenna onto the gold port on the back of the camera. Then place the base on the surface where you want to mount the camera. Insert and tighten three screws into the wood to hold the base in place.
The installation is really that easy. The only step that may require a little work is to route the power cable to a nearby outdoor outlet.
Ideally, you should use any external wall structure to secure the power cable (using cable ties or wall brackets). These designs can also help hide the cable from sight.
If there is no outdoor outlet nearby, you can run an extension cable from the outlet along the base of the foundation to where the camera is located.
Just make sure the camera plug and extension plug is installed in a place that protects the junction from rain.
Do not leave this connection on the ground.
Once your camera is set up and turned on, you’re ready to connect to Wi-Fi and start using it.
Using the LaView Mobile App
Setting up an R3 indoor security camera or R12 outdoor security camera works the same way with the app. You can follow these steps to configure one or both cameras.
To start monitoring and interacting with cameras, install the LaView app on your mobile device. You can download it for Android from Google Play or for iPhone from Apple Store.
When you first open the app, you will need to register a new account with LaView. This account is free. You don’t need to subscribe to an annual or monthly subscription to use the app or access your devices.
After registration, you will see a screen where you can select Add Device to start adding any new LaView security device you have purchased.
You can browse the categories to find the LaView device you want to add.
After selecting a device, you will see a reminder to check if the indicator or beep is active on it. If you just bought it and turned it on, it should be active. If you are using a previously configured device, you may need to perform a reset as described in the user manual.
After making sure your device is ready, click Next and you can choose your home Wi-Fi network.
Then enter the password for the Wi-Fi network. Click Next again.
On the next screen, you will see a QR code all over the screen. Just keep your phone screen right in front of the surveillance camera. The camera reads the QR code and is automatically programmed with the required network credentials.
The camera will beep to inform you that automatic programming was successful. When you hear this signal, select “I heard the invitation.”
Finally, you will see a screen informing you that the device has been successfully added to your LaView application. Click Finish to finish.
When you view your device in the app, you will see a notification test asking you to grant LaView the notification permissions it needs to send push notifications. Select Test to see instructions on how to do this. Or check the box to stop seeing the nasty reminder.
Repeat the above process for all LaView cameras you purchased. The process is exactly the same regardless of the device.
Using the LaView App to Monitor Security Cameras
To view the R3 security camera using LaView app, simply tap that camera in the list of connected devices.
You will see the image from that camera at the top of the screen and all the controls below it.
Here are the controls you can use on this screen:
If you tap the “Edit” icon in the upper right corner of the window, you will access additional camera settings.
These include:
-
- Record and play 1080P high definition video (to your phone).
- Remote control for 360-degree horizontal pan and 110-degree tilt.
- IR night vision capability.
- Have audiovisual conversations with someone nearby.
- MicroSD card support for local video or photo storage (not included).
- Push notifications to your phone when motion or sound is detected.
- Compatible with both Alexa and Google Home.

- Speak: Have a two-way conversation with someone in the room. Press Conversation again to end the conversation.
- Record: Click to start or stop recording live camera feed. This entry will be saved on your phone.
- Play: Play a previously recorded video (only works if you have installed an SD card).
- Direction: Pan the camera remotely in any direction using the on-screen controls.
- Alarm: Specify when you want to be notified of any movement or sound activity detected by the camera.
- Album: View screenshots or videos you’ve saved on your phone.
- Door Lock: Control any LaView door locks you have installed and connected to your network.
- Cloud Video: Access screenshots or videos saved in your cloud account (if you purchased the cloud storage add-on).
Motion detection schedule is a particularly useful feature. Set start and end times for motion detection, and you can make sure there is no activity in your home when it shouldn’t.
This can be during the day when everyone is at work, or late at night when everyone is asleep and no one has to wander around the house.
You will notice that the connection and viewing of the R12 wireless CCTV camera are completely identical to the R3.
You will only need to go to this central application (LaView application) every time you buy a new LaView security device.
A Self-Contained Custom Home Security Solution
LaView stands out as a security platform as you don’t need to use any cloud resources or buy a subscription if you don’t want to. Once added to the LaView app, you can connect to your cameras over your home network rather than through any cloud services.
This provides added security and peace of mind as you don’t need to depend on the Internet to connect to your cameras.
The R3 usually costs $ 39, while the R12 retails for $ 50. Prices for these cameras are well below the average price of similar wireless security cameras, many of which lack some of the features you get with these LaView cameras.
This is a budget security camera that’s perfect for anyone looking to start distributing home security devices around the house without spending a fortune.
