Nintendo announced a new version of its switch, dubbed the OLED model, on July 6, 2021 via its Twitter account. Many people assumed that Nintendo was announcing a new version of the Switch, but for many the news fell short of their expectations.

There aren’t many differences between the original Switch console and the new OLED Nintendo Switch model. Most of the changes boil down to display, storage and some other minor updates. Below you will find details on each of these new features and the final verdict on whether or not to buy.

What Is the Nintendo Switch OLED Model and Should You Buy It?

The Nintendo Switch OLED Screen

The brand new screen uses an OLED (organic light emitting diode) screen to make the display on the switch even better. It is a 7-inch widescreen, so games look much brighter and clearer on it. With OLED, the colors on the screen will be much brighter, resulting in deeper blacks and more color detail.

Compare that to the standard Nintendo Switch, which only has a 6.2-inch screen and uses an LCD (liquid crystal display). Nintendo Switch Lite is even smaller at 5.5 inches. All Switch models currently display 720p in desktop / handheld mode, despite differences in screen size.

The use of an OLED screen also means that you can easily view what is displayed on the screen from different angles. If you really enjoy handheld playing, this can make the process a lot more enjoyable as you don’t have to worry about viewing from the right angle.

Storage Capacity

The OLED Nintendo Switch boasts twice the internal storage capacity of the original Switch at 64GB. You can also insert an SD card if you want to expand your space, potentially giving you up to 2TB.

This is a big improvement over the standard Nintendo Switch, which comes with 32GB of free space out of the box. This can make a huge difference, especially for those who like to download their games digitally. Even just a couple of the larger games that Switch has to offer could easily fill that space, so doubling the amount is a welcome change.

A New Stand

The stand on the original Switch left a lot to be desired, forcing you to put your balancing skills to the test every time you wanted to play tabletop gameplay. It could also be easily broken due to its small width.

In the OLED model, the stand has been completely reimagined to cover the entire length of the system. It’s much sturdier than the original Switch stand, making it much easier to pop out and play.

Battery Life

Nintendo Switch OLED screens tend to be better battery savers as they don’t need to unnecessarily light up parts of the screen that need to be darker. This results in a more efficient use of energy. The Nintendo website states that the battery life of the OLED model is about the same as that of the standard model – 4.5-9 hours. Keep in mind, however, that the OLED model’s screen is significantly larger, which means that even with this upgrade and improvement in display quality, you won’t have to sacrifice battery life for it.

Console Design

For both the OLED Nintendo Switch model and the standard Nintendo Switch model, the design of the console itself is virtually the same. Both feature a removable Joycon, and the shape of the console remains similar, except that the OLED is only slightly taller and heavier.

As for the colors, there are some differences. Both systems will have red and blue Neon colors. However, where the standard switch also had an all-gray option, the OLED switch would have a white option.

Docking the System

Both Nintendo Switch systems can be connected to a separate docking station, allowing you to play games in TV mode using an HDMI cable. However, there is an update to the OLED Switch Dock that now includes an Ethernet port. This can provide players with a faster wired internet connection that the original Switch didn’t have unless you bought a USB adapter.

Nintendo is also about to start selling the redesigned dock separately, so if you want to, you don’t have to buy an OLED Switch to get it. It also comes in white, as opposed to the standard Switch’s gray dock.

Should You Buy the Nintendo Switch OLED Model?

While this is not the completely redesigned Switch Pro that many hoped for, the OLED model still comes with a lot of important upgrades. But is it worth the $ 350 price tag?

If you already own the original Switch, the updates are probably not radical enough to charge that much for a slightly better console. It might be worth waiting until Nintendo comes out with something substantially different. Especially if you play in TV mode most of the time, the OLED screen and other enhancements are more about handheld gaming anyway.

However, if you don’t have a Switch console but are considering buying one given the OLED model might be worth it. The original Switch is currently around $ 299 at most retailers, so if you’re looking to pay $ 50 extra for some upgrades, that’s a pretty good deal. If handheld gaming is what interests you the most with the Switch, you’ll probably have more fun with OLED too.
