Spoken Content (formerly Speech) is an Apple accessibility feature in iOS and iPadOS. This allows your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad to read text aloud. This is useful if you have trouble reading small text or when you’re multitasking.

Accessing Your Spoken Content Settings on iPhone
In order for your iPhone or iPad to be able to read text aloud, you must first access the spoken content settings. To get to them:
1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Scroll down and click Accessibility.
3. In the Vision section, click Spoken Content to view all available settings related to this feature.

Have Your iPhone Read Selected Text Out Aloud
Turn on Speak Selection to set iPhone to read selected text aloud. You can then select text in documents and web pages and click the “Speak” button on the pop-up menu to convert the text to speech.
Advice. Tap and hold on a word to highlight it. Then use the surrounding bullets to highlight additional words, sentences, and paragraphs.
By default, your iPhone underlines sentences and highlights words as you read them with Speech Selection. You can customize this by delving into content highlight settings (more on that later).
Have Your iPhone Speak Text on a Screen
You can also make your iPhone read the entire screen aloud by activating the toggle next to Speak Screen. Have the Speech Controller Always Show Up on Screen
You can also make sure that the Speech Controller overlay always stays on the screen. To do this, tap the “Speech Controller” option and activate the switch next to “Show Controller”.
You can then expand the Speech Controller and tap the Play icon to have your iPhone speak whatever is on the screen. Again, use the Previous and Next icons to move between lines and the Speed ​​icon to increase or decrease speed. Tap the Highlight Content option in Spoken Content preferences to set how highlighting works when your iPhone speaks text.
You can set iPhone to highlight only selected words or sentences, change the highlight style (underline or background color), and customize the highlight color for words and sentences. Try different combinations to see which one suits you best.
Have Your iPhone Provide You With Typing Feedback
Spoken Content also lets your iPhone speak text as you type. Click Enter Feedback to determine how you would like to receive feedback. You can have your iPhone speak single characters (with delayed feedback), entire words, automatic corrections, and even predictive text input.

Choose a Voice and Dialect For Spoken Content
Do you want your iPhone to read text aloud in a different voice? Tap Voices and you can switch between voices for each language your iPhone speaks aloud, such as English, French, Hindi, and more.
In addition, you can switch to an extended version of the same voice. For example, choose English > US English > Samantha and tap Samantha (Advanced). The voice pack (which typically weighs around 150MB) must be downloaded before you can use it.
Modify the Speaking Rate on Your iPhone
