By default, your iPhone underlines sentences and highlights words as you read them with Speech Selection. You can customize this by delving into content highlight settings (more on that later).

Have Your iPhone Speak Text on a Screen

You can also make your iPhone read the entire screen aloud by activating the toggle next to Speak Screen. You can then swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen, and the device will begin to speak everything that happens on the screen, starting from the top. Please note that this does not work on the lock screen, home screen, or Control Center.

Use the playback controls on the speech controller to speed up or slow down your reading speed, skip lines and sentences, and pause reading. You can also tap the Speak on Touch icon and tap any phrase or sentence to have iPhone read it. If you do nothing, the speech controller will disappear.

With the Speak Screen option enabled, you can also make Siri start speaking by saying “Hey Siri, Speak Screen.” Learn how to install and set up Siri on iPhone.

Have the Speech Controller Always Show Up on Screen

You can also make sure that the Speech Controller overlay always stays on the screen. To do this, tap the “Speech Controller” option and activate the switch next to “Show Controller”.

You can then expand the Speech Controller and tap the Play icon to have your iPhone speak whatever is on the screen. Again, use the Previous and Next icons to move between lines and the Speed icon to increase or decrease speed. Don’t forget to turn on the “Speak on touch” feature so that the device reads everything you touch.

By default, a long press on the minimized speech controller icon prompts your iPhone to start speaking text aloud, while double-tapping the icon switches it to Speak On Touch mode. You can change this with the Long Press and Double Press options at the bottom of the Speech Controller screen.

Also, you can change the transparency of the speech controller by touching Idle Opacity. Decreasing the value will make it less intrusive.

Have Your iPhone Highlight Text As It Speaks Aloud

Tap the Highlight Content option in Spoken Content preferences to set how highlighting works when your iPhone speaks text.

You can set iPhone to highlight only selected words or sentences, change the highlight style (underline or background color), and customize the highlight color for words and sentences. Try different combinations to see which one suits you best.

Do you want your iPhone to read text aloud in a different voice? Tap Voices and you can switch between voices for each language your iPhone speaks aloud, such as English, French, Hindi, and more.

In addition, you can switch to an extended version of the same voice. For example, choose English > US English > Samantha and tap Samantha (Advanced). The voice pack (which typically weighs around 150MB) must be downloaded before you can use it.

Don’t Forget to Review Other Accessibility Options

If you find it difficult to read your iPhone’s screen, you can also use other accessibility features designed for people with visual impairments. These include:

VoiceOver: Make your iPhone speak the items on the screen aloud by tapping them.

Zoom: Enlarges the screen.

Text Display and Size: Increase the default text size.

Movement: Reduce movement to improve visibility.

Audio Descriptions: Your iPhone automatically speaks audio descriptions for supported videos, such as Apple TV.

As with conversational content, you’ll find these features under Settings > Accessibility. Try them and see if they work for you. And if you like this feature on your iPhone or iPad, you can also make your Mac read text aloud.
