Install Adobe Digital Editions In Ubuntu Linux

Libraries have been around for quite some time. However, one of the nice things about living in the digital age is the ability to get books from the library digitally. In other words, e-books. To take advantage of this, the computer user must have a library card, Internet access, and Adobe Digital Editions, the software used to download the book. You can then use this software to read the book on your computer or transfer it to your electronic device.

Unfortunately for Linux users, Adobe hasn’t created a version of Adobe Digital Editions that runs natively on Linux. Luckily for Linux users, Wine (an environment that allows many Windows programs to run on Linux without emulation) exists, and it turns out that installing Adobe Digital Editions and getting it up and running is not that hard. Here’s how to do it in Ubuntu.

The first step is to open your Terminal.

Now enter sudo apt-add-repository ppa: ubuntu-wine / ppa, which will add the Ubuntu Wine PPA to your list of software sources. Then enter sudo apt-get update to update your listings and make the software in this repository available for installation.

Finally, enter sudo apt-get install wine1.3 wine1.3-gecko, which will install the latest 1.3 beta and Gecko web rendering support.

Note. You will also notice that several other libraries are being installed, including several new fonts and the CAB program for Windows.

Once you’ve installed Wine, head over to the Adobe Digital Editions website Here we will find a direct link to Windows Installer.

Once downloaded, right click and use Wine Windows Program Loader to start the installation process.

The process is very simple; just select the options you want and click Next.

Once you have installed Adobe Digital Editions, launch it from the Application Menu, Keyboard Launcher, Dash, or any other method. First, you will be prompted to authorize your computer, which you will need to check out books from the online library.

Then go to your library’s e-book website and search for a book or download one you’ve already read.

What you actually download through a web browser is a file that tells Adobe Digital Editions where the download eBook is. After launching Adobe Digital Editions, you will see the actual eBook download.

You can now read your book on your computer.

As stated above, it’s a shame that Adobe didn’t create their own version of Adobe Digital Editions for Linux. When considering how well it works in Wine, it might seem like creating your own version of Linux won’t be a big deal. However, due to how simple the installation process is, it may not be that important. The ease of installation makes it really easy to start reading library eBooks on your Linux computer.
