Insert a Bullet in the Middle of a Sentence in Word

There are times when you want to insert a marker in the middle of a sentence or line of text. For example, you can place markers between parts of the address, as shown below.

The above markers were inserted by pressing Alt and typing 0183. You can also insert markers or other symbols graphically. If desired, you can also insert larger markers, as shown in the image below.

Enter a bullet in Word

To insert a marker graphically in Word, place the insertion point where you want to insert the marker and click the Insert tab on the ribbon.

– /

Click the Symbol button in the Symbols group. A palette of different symbols will be displayed. If the marker you want to insert appears in the palette, click the marker symbol to insert it. If the marker symbol you want to insert is not available in the palette, click More Symbols.

NOTE. If you’re using Word 2003, choose Symbol from the Insert menu to access the Symbols panel.

The Symbol dialog box opens. Find the bullet character you want to insert. You can use the Subset drop-down list to display specific types of characters.

We found a marker that we wanted to use in a subset of common punctuation marks. Click the marker icon in the symbol grid in the Symbol dialog box. Click the Insert button to insert the symbol. DO NOT close the Symbol dialog box.

There are two types of dialog boxes: modal and modeless. A modal dialog requires you to interact with it and close it before you can interact with the main parent program again. The Symbol dialog box is a modeless dialog box, so you can interact with your Word document while the dialog box is still open, and then click the Symbol dialog box to return to it. This is useful when you want to insert multiple characters into one block of text.

After you type some more text and want to insert another marker, click the Symbol dialog box to select it and click the Insert button again. The marker is still highlighted in the symbol grid in the dialog box.

When you have finished pasting any markers or other symbols you want to insert, click the Close button to close the Symbol dialog box.

The keyboard shortcut for the selected marker appears at the bottom of the Symbol dialog box (Alt + 0149 for the selected marker). You can use this keyboard shortcut to insert a marker into a line of text as we mentioned at the beginning of this post. Enjoy!
