Do you need to crop certain parts of your video before attaching them to emails or sending them to friends? We will show you different ways to crop videos on iPhone and iPad.
You can use Apple’s built-in video editing tools or third-party apps to adjust the video length by changing the start and end times. Skip down to the sections below for step-by-step instructions.
Trim Videos Using the Photos App
The Photos app is the default tool for viewing and editing media on iPhone and iPad. Here’s how to crop a video in the app:
Launch the Photos app, scroll to the Media Types section and select the video you want to crop.
Click “Edit” in the upper right corner to launch the photo editor.
The Video tab has two icons with left and right arrows at the beginning and end of the timeline. Move or drag the arrow to the left to the desired starting point.
The right arrow adjusts the end of the video. Drag the slider to the point where you want the video to stop playing.
As you adjust the arrows, the timeline window turns yellow. You should also see a preview / thumbnail and timestamp of a specific point in the video.
Your device will save a portion of the video in the yellow timeline box. The rollers outside the box will be clipped. Click the Play button to view the trimmed portion of the video.
If you’re happy with the results, click Finish to save the video to your device.
Save Video as New Clip will export and save the trimmed portion of the clip as a new video. The original version or parent copy of the video will remain intact.
Select Save Video if you want to save only the trimmed version of the video to your library.
Trim a Slo-Mo Video in iPhone and iPad
Slow motion video is different from regular videos. They usually start playing at normal speed, slow down in the middle, and disappear at the end at normal speed. We will show you how to reduce the duration of a clip and reduce the slow motion effect in slow motion video.
Launch the Photos app, go to the Media Types section and select Time Lapse.
Select the slow-motion video you want to trim and click Edit in the upper right corner.
To shorten the length or duration of a video, drag the left or right arrows on either side of the timeline to the desired start and stop points.
The split section in the next timeline highlights the portion of the video that plays in slow motion. Drag the left and right vertical lines to decrease the duration of the slow motion effect.
Click the play button to preview your changes and click Finish to save them to your library.
Trim Videos Using iMovie
iMovie is a video editing application developed by Apple and pre-installed on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Here’s how to crop video on iPhone using iMovie.
Open the Photos app, select the video you want to crop, and click Edit.
Tap the three-dot menu icon in the upper right corner and choose iMovie from the Options menu.
Tap the Scissors icon to open the video cropping tool. Then drag the yellow playhead icons on either side of the timeline to change the start and end position of the video playback.
Tap the play icon to view the trimmed clip and tap Done.
iMovie will export the cropped section of the video to the photo editor.
Click Done to save the trimmed video to your iPhone or iPad library.
Undo a Video Trim
When you edit or trim a video on your iPhone or iPad, the Photos app does not remove the trimmed portion of the clip. You can always go back to the photo editor and change the start and end times of the video clip.
Open the cropped video, click Edit in the upper right corner, and drag the left and right arrows to their original position.
You can also undo cropping from a video by choosing Revert in the lower right corner of the editor.
The Revert option undoes cropping and other changes (filters, exposure adjustments, saturation, brightness, and so on) made to the video clip. It’s better to manually adjust the yellow sliders if you only want to undo the cropping of the video.
Note. If you saved the trimmed video clip using the Save Video As New Clip option, you cannot undo the trim or restore the clip to its original length. This is because the original (read: no crop) version of the video is already in your library.
