How to Use Windows 10 in Tablet Mode 2021.
Windows 10 has several “modes” and features to help you get the most out of your computer. For example, compatibility mode allows legacy software to run smoothly. There’s also Game Mode, a feature that optimizes your device for better gaming performance.
In this article, we will talk about Windows 10 Tablet Mode and show you how it works. Windows 10 Tablet Mode makes your touchscreen tablet or laptop even more touch-friendly. It modifies some of the onscreen elements of your device’s interface to make it easier to touch.
How to Enable Tablet Mode on Windows 10
Some hybrid laptops or 2-in-1 convertible devices automatically enter tablet mode when you fold or detach the keyboard. If this doesn’t happen on your touchscreen or convertible laptop, you can manually activate Windows 10 Tablet Mode from the Windows Action Center.
1. Click the speech bubble icon at the far right of the taskbar (or press Windows key + A) to open Action Center.
2. Select tablet mode from the list of options.
The default tablet mode tile should be in Action Center. If you don’t see this setting, the tile is hidden, or you’ve completed the maximum number of quick actions that Action Center can hold.
The Action Center can accommodate a maximum of 16 Quick Actions. Thus, if the tablet mode tile is missing, it is most likely hidden in the Action Center. You will need to delete the item to make room for tablet mode in the Quick Action area.
Right-click any tile and select Edit Quick Actions.
Click the Add (+) icon and select Tablet Mode from the available options.
Select Done to save your changes. Can’t add tablet mode because the Quick Action area is busy? Delete the item you hardly use (tap the pushpin icon) and try adding Tablet Mode again.
If you still can’t find the Tablet Mode option when editing Quick Actions, your device may not support Windows 10 Tablet Mode. Update your tablet or laptop to the latest build of Windows 10 and check again. You can also contact your PC manufacturer for support.
What Changes in Tablet Mode
We highlight some of the changes that Tablet Mode makes to your tablet or laptop. When Windows 10 Tablet Mode is active, you will notice the following changes:
1. Updated taskbar
In tablet mode, apps and shortcuts pinned to the taskbar are hidden. There is a new search icon (which replaces the Windows search bar), as well as a back button and task viewer icon.
When you minimize the application, you will need to tap the task view icon to restore the application or switch to another active application. The Back button takes you to the previous page in the application or window.
If you want your pinned and active applications to appear on the screen, display the taskbar in the tablet mode settings menu. Go to Settings> System> Tablet Mode and turn off Hide Application Icons on Taskbar in Tablet Mode.
This will return the taskbar to the bottom of the screen or where it was before Windows 10 Tablet Mode was activated. Another way to display the taskbar icons in Tablet Mode is to right-click or hold the taskbar and select Show Application Icons.
2. Permanent Start Menu
In Windows 10 Tablet mode, the Start menu becomes the home screen; Windows gets rid of the desktop. When you close the application, you are taken to the full screen version of the Start menu.
3. No deploy / restore button
You cannot resize an application or window in tablet mode. The Maximum / Recover icon turns gray and inactive. The closest thing you can do is resize the app in Split Screen mode. Drag or swipe down on the app window until you see a split in the center of the screen.
Drag the app to the left or right of the screen to reduce its size. When you open the second app, Windows will automatically dock the app window to the other side of the screen. To resize any of the apps, move the black divider to the left or right, respectively.
To close applications in split screen mode, click the x icon in the title bar or drag the application window to the bottom of the screen.
4. Touch keyboard
Take a closer look at the notification area (right end of the taskbar) and you will find a keyboard icon. This is a Windows touch keyboard. The keyboard should automatically appear on the screen when you tap a text field in Windows 10 tablet mode. If not, click the keyboard icon in the notification area to open the touch keyboard.
Either right-click or hold the taskbar and select Show Touch Keyboard Button.
Tablet Mode Settings on Windows 10
Windows tablets automatically go into tablet mode when turned on. For hybrid and convertible laptops, you will have to manually activate tablet mode with Windows 10. Interestingly, Windows allows you to configure your computer to automatically switch to tablet mode when you log in.
There are other interesting settings to help you get the most out of your tablet mode. Go to Settings> System> Tablet Mode and let’s see.
1. Tablet Mode Login Options
Tap the When I sign in drop-down menu and select Use Tablet Mode. This will force Windows to automatically turn on Tablet Mode when you log in or restart your computer.
Use the appropriate mode for my hardware is the default setting. This puts Windows in the driver’s seat; Windows will only enable Tablet Mode when you fold the Hybrid Laptop. The Use Desktop Mode option will boot your tablet or hybrid laptop even if you fold the keyboard.
2. Behavior when switching tablet mode
If you’ve set Tablet Mode to turn on automatically at login, you have the option to customize the toggle behavior. Always ask me before switching is the default setting.
When your computer boots up, Windows will display a confirmation prompt before switching to tablet mode. Select Yes at the prompt to activate tablet mode immediately.
“Don’t ask me and always switch†will boot the device into tablet mode without confirmation. Select “Don’t ask me or switch” if you don’t want Windows to automatically activate tablet mode or display a confirmation prompt.
Windows 10 Tablet Mode Simplified
These are the most important details of Windows 10 Tablet Mode. You can also use this feature on Windows computers without a touchscreen. The only difference is that you cannot navigate the screen with your finger. To return to desktop mode, open Action Center and tap Tablet mode.
