If you download videos often, then you are probably familiar with the MKV file format. It also means that you are familiar with his quirks. As blessing as MKV is for some users, there are those who simply cannot play their videos after opening the file.
This leads users to convert their MKV files to MP4. In this post, you will learn how to convert MKV to MP4 format.

Handbrake is one of the best programs you can use to convert one video file to another. It is an open source video transcoder, meaning it is free to use.
Just download the program and install. Once complete, you are ready to convert the files.

When you start the program, you will be prompted to open the file you want to convert. You can use the tooltip in the sidebar or drag and drop the file into Handbrake
Use folder (batch scan) to convert multiple files. Otherwise, choosing a file will do.
If you are not prompted to open the file automatically, you can click Open Source on the main control panel.
Or you can go to File Open Source.
After selecting the MKV file, you can proceed with converting the file to MP4.

The main Handbrake control panel provides you with information about the video you have opened. Below the initial information, you will find several tabs where you can adjust the settings.
Feel free to explore all your options. Playing with these settings can improve file conversion.
However, if you need to convert the MKV file as is, open the Summary tab and select MP4 under Format.
In the Save As section, add a filename, then click Browse to specify the destination.
When ready, click “Start Encoding”.
If for any reason you want to pause or cancel the conversion, simply click the Pause or Stop button respectively.
Once Handbrake has done its job, you will find your file at the destination you specified.
Converting using Wondershare UniConverter
Another tool that can be used to convert MKV to MP4 is Wondershare’s UniConverter.
After installation, launch UniConverter. Then you will be prompted to add the file you want to convert. Click “Add Files” to open the video.
You will be given a set of output options in the right window including MP4. Choose MP4 as final result.
If you want to reduce the size of the video file, click the Compress icon. The icon is right below the Target section.
A pop-up window will appear. Use the slider to increase or decrease the file size.
When you’re done, you can click the Convert All button to start the process.
Although Wondershare claims that UniConverter is free to use, you can only convert a third of the length of an MKV video file. If you want to convert all videos, you will need to upgrade to the paid version.
