How to Use Google’s Personal Safety App – 2022.
Do you have a Google Pixel smartphone? If you have the latest Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, or older Pixel phone, you can install and use Google’s Personal Safety app. The app will help you prepare for an emergency, and in the event of an emergency, the app can connect you to help and the information you need.
The Personal Safety app has features such as car accident detection and location sharing with emergency contacts. You can also receive alerts for natural disasters or emergencies nearby.
We will tell you how to install or activate the app on your Google Pixel device and how to use it to increase your personal security. Apple iPhone users should follow our guide to setting up emergency SOS and emergency contacts on iOS.
How to Install the Personal Safety App
The Personal Security app requires Android version 10 and up. The app will install automatically if you have a Pixel 4 or later. Oddly enough, this app is called “Personal Security” in the Google Play store, but simply “Security” in the list of apps on Pixel phones.
Google Pixel 3a or earlier
If you don’t see an app in the app drawer on your Google Pixel 3a or earlier, it might be installed but hidden. To check, do the following:
Go to Settings > About Phone.Tap Emergency Info.On the banner, tap Update.
If you don’t have the Security app installed, you can still sign in to your Google account and add emergency contacts and health information. Remember that anyone who picks up the phone will see your emergency information on the phone’s lock screen. This can be very helpful for first responders to know who to contact if you are incapacitated. You can disable this setting in the Security app.
By installing the Safety app, you will be able to use even more of the features that it offers, although accident detection is only available on Pixel 3 and later devices.
Personal Safety App Setup
If you haven’t used the Security app before, you’ll see a Start Setup button to guide you through the setup.
First, you can set up emergency real-time location sharing. This is a relatively new feature. Select “Next” to set up emergency contacts, or “No thanks” to proceed to the next section.
View your emergency contact list and add a contact if you wish.
When the emergency sharing feature is activated, your phone will send SMS updates to your emergency contacts. Choose what information will be shared. Real-time location data transmission is required for emergency data transmission.
Then click “Go to Maps” to set up Google Maps location sharing.
Google Maps will always prompt you to allow location access. Click “Go to Settings” to allow access. After setting the permissions, go back to the Security app and click Done.
Then turn on car crash detection or try the demo to see what happens if your phone detects a car crash.
If you would like to receive alerts for emergencies occurring in your area, click “Turn on” or “Learn more” in the “Receive alerts for upcoming emergencies” section.
Once you’ve completed the steps above, the Security app will be ready to help you in case of an emergency.
How to Get Help When There’s an Emergency
The Security app offers several ways to request help or information during an emergency.
Schedule a security check
If you are in an unfamiliar area or feel like you are in a situation where your safety may be at risk, you can schedule a security check. The app will check you and your phone will notify the assigned emergency contacts if you don’t answer the flag.
Tap the yellow security check button.
Then select your situation from the “Reason” drop-down list. Choose from Walking Alone, Jogging, Transportation, Hiking, or Write Your Own.
Select the duration of the security check.
Click “Next” and choose which emergency contacts should be notified if you don’t respond to the security check. If you wish, you can notify your emergency contacts that you are scheduling a security check. When you’re done, click Enable.
2 – When a security check is active, the main screen of the Security app will show you how much time you have left before it’s time to sign up and who it will notify if you don’t respond.3 -Â When the app asks you to register, you will have one minute to respond before the emergency exchange is activated. To remove a security check, tap the notification at any time. Choose one of the following options:
I’m fine. Don’t share.Start sharing now.Call 911.
If you select Start sharing now, further checks will be stopped. However, if you lose signal or your phone is switched off, the check will remain active and it will tell your last known location to your emergency contacts.
SOS Emergency
To activate Emergency SOS, quickly press the power button on your phone five times (or more). The SOS emergency call function has three main functions:
Call the emergency number.Share information with your emergency contacts.Record the emergency on video.
Set up the SOS emergency call feature in the Security app by selecting the Settings/Gear icon. Tap Emergency SOS > Start Setup. Follow the wizard to select options such as playing a countdown when Emergency SOS starts and viewing the phone number the app will use to contact emergency services.
When you record a video using Emergency SOS, the video will be automatically shared with your emergency contacts if you have automatic sharing turned on. Also, videos are automatically uploaded to the cloud in case of loss or breakdown of the phone. An Internet connection is required to download and manage videos.
