If you have AirPods Pro, you should look into the Conversation Boost feature. By the time you’ve finished reading this post, you’ll want to wear your AirPods 24/7, especially if you have a little hearing loss.

This post explains what AirPods Pro Conversation Boost does and how to enable this feature on your iPhone or iPad. We’ve also included some tips and tricks for using AirPods Pro to improve your communication experience.

What is Conversation Boost on AirPods Pro?

AirPods Pro support Noise Cancellation and Transparency Noise Cancellation modes. Noise canceling blocks outside noise and counters unwanted inside (in the ears) sound with anti-noise. Transparency mode does the opposite, allowing ambient sound to enter your ears.

Conversation Boost is a customizable form of transparency mode that enhances face-to-face communication. The whole point of Conversation Boost is to help you hear people better when you’re wearing AirPods Pro. When enabled, the AirPods Pro microphone focuses on the person directly in front of you.

Apple introduced Conversation Boost in iOS 15.1 and iPadOS 15.1. This feature is disabled by default, so you need to enable it manually in your device’s accessibility settings.

How to Use Conversation Boost on iPhone or iPad

Connect your AirPods Pro to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and follow these steps:

Open Settings and click Accessibility.Scroll to the Hearing section and click Audio/Video.Click Headphone placement.

Turn on the headphone setting.Scroll to the Apply With section and click Transparency Mode.

If you don’t find Transparency mode in this section, remove and reinsert your AirPods Pro earbuds and check again. You don’t have to wear both AirPods; just one AirPod in your ear can do wonders.

Turn on custom transparency.Turn on Conversation Boost.

Remember that Conversation Boost is a custom form of the Transparency noise reduction mode. Therefore, your AirPods Pro must be in Transparency mode to use this feature.

Open the iPhone Control Center, press and hold the volume slider, tap Noise Control, and select Transparency.

Or go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information icon next to your AirPods, and select Transparency under Noise Control.

Adjust Transparency Mode for Improved Conversations

Conversation Amplification is a feature of AirPods Pro that amplifies the voice of a person speaking directly to you. If the ambient noise is louder than the voice of the person talking to you, reduce the amount of noise your AirPods absorb.

First, make sure the Hearing control is in the Control Center of your iPhone or iPad. Go to Settings > Control Center, scroll to the More Controls section, and tap the plus sign next to Hearing.

After that, put on your AirPods Pro, open your device’s Control Center, and tap the Hearing (or ear) icon. Scroll down the Hearing menu and make sure that Conversation Amplification is turned on. Otherwise, click Conversation Boost to enable this feature. Then drag the Ambient Noise Reduction slider (to the right) to reduce background noise.

Decreasing the gain level (drag the slider to the left) can also reduce background noise in transparency mode.

Conversation Boost Not Working? 5 Ways to Fix

If you’re unable to activate or use AirPods Pro Conversation Boost on your device, these troubleshooting tips can help.

1. Use original or compatible AirPods (Pro)

For now, Conversation Boost only works on AirPods Pro. This is probably due to the fact that these are the only Apple wireless headphones that support noise reduction and transparency mode.

AirPods Max also support noise reduction and transparency mode. However, Conversation Boost is not available for headphones.

We should also mention that Conversation Boost will not work (correctly or at all) on counterfeit or counterfeit AirPods Pro.

2. Update your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch

Conversation Boost is available on iPhone and iPod Touch with iOS 15.1 or later. iPadOS requires at least iPadOS 15.1 or later to use this feature.

You won’t find Conversation Boost in your audio accessibility settings if your device doesn’t meet operating system requirements. If you have original AirPods Pro but can’t activate Conversation Boost, update your iPhone or iPad and check again.

Connect your device to a Wi-Fi network, go to Settings > General > Software Update, and click Download and Install.

3. Update your AirPods

Conversation Boost may not work if your AirPods Pro are not running the latest firmware. Refer to our AirPods update guide to force an AirPods Pro firmware update.

4. Fit your AirPods Pro

Noise canceling features (noise canceling and transparency mode) work best when AirPods Pro fit properly in your ears. Remove and reinsert your AirPods Pro into your earlobes and make sure they fit snugly (but are comfortable). Engage someone in a physical conversation and see if Conversation Boost works.

Replace your AirPods if you still don’t notice the conversation amplification effect. AirPods Pro come with medium sized silicone ear tips and two additional pairs of different sizes in the package. If you find the pre-attached ear tips uncomfortable or loose, use the larger (L) or smaller (S) ear tips.

After that, run the ear tips fit test to make sure the new ear tips provide a good fit.

Put both AirPods in your ears and connect them to your iPhone or iPad.Open the Settings app, select Bluetooth, and tap the information icon next to your AirPods.Tap Earbud Fit Test. >

Click “Continue” and click the “Play” button to start the test. Your iPhone or iPad should play audio through the AirPods. Click Done if both (left and right) AirPods score Good Print.

If the test doesn’t show a good fit, adjust your loose AirPods or try a different ear tip. You may need to use different ear tips depending on the shape or size of your earlobes. For instructions on selecting, removing, and attaching ear tips to AirPods Pro, see this Apple Support document.

5. Clean your AirPods

Removing dirt, debris, and earwax from the vital parts of your AirPods can make them louder and fix audio-related issues. Use a dry Q-tip or lint-free cloth to wipe down your AirPods Pro and charging case.

Place your AirPods in your ears, turn on Transparency Mode, and check if the Conversation Boot is working properly.

AirPods-Assisted Listening

Conversation Boost is designed for people with mild hearing impairments. However, people with perfect hearing can also use this feature for distraction-free conversations. You no longer need to take your AirPods off to talk to someone. We’re confident that newer AirPods will support Conversation Boost, so the accessibility feature isn’t limited to AirPods Pro.
