Broadcasting is a method of projecting or sending content wirelessly to another screen, such as a TV or second monitor. After setting up your Google Chromecast device, you can play any content from your mobile device or desktop on your TV or remote monitor, turning the device into a remote control.
This saves you the agonizing hassle of connecting your computer to your TV with an HDMI cable, which depends a lot on the length of the cable. Plus, it allows you to wirelessly mirror your entire screen or any browser tab in Google Chrome with a few clicks, so you can view static files such as photos, display a presentation, or view a website at a larger scale.

To connect to your desktop Chromecast, you need a Google Chromecast device, a computer, an Internet connection, and a TV to which you are casting content.
How does Chromecast Casting work
The main difference between using an HDMI cable to display your desktop screen on a TV and broadcasting is that the former is wired and the latter is wireless. However, when streaming, content is streamed to your TV from a supported service like Netflix, YouTube, and others.
Basically, you tell the Chromecast device to go to a service like Netflix, get a specific video, and play it on your TV. Your device, such as a smartphone, becomes the remote control from which you play, pause, skip to the next episode, or select another video.

Unlike smartphones that use the cloud to stream content from Netflix or YouTube, your desktop relies on the processing power of your PC to stream content from your desktop to your TV or remote monitor.

Chromecast Desktop Casting
The tools you need
- Your computer (with minimum system requirements, including the Chrome browser).
- Chromecast device or TV with Chromecast built-in.
- Reliable Wi-Fi network for good performance.
The first step is to check the Wi-Fi network of your desktop Chromecast to make sure it is on the same Wi-Fi network as your computer. The Chromecast can only remember one Wi-Fi network at a time, so if you’ve changed yours, set up your Chromecast on a new network, or connect to a new one if you’d like.
- To do this, click the Wi-Fi icon on the desktop taskbar in the lower right corner (Windows) or upper right (Mac) and find the SSID of your Wi-Fi network.
- Open the Google Home app on your device and tap your Chromecast name.

Expand your Screen Properties
There are so many interesting things you can do with Chromecast, and casting your Chromecast desktop is just one of them. How well this will work depends on the strength and reliability of your Wi-Fi signal, as well as the processing power of your PC. It’s not as perfect as streaming with an HDMI cable, but it’s the easiest and cheapest wireless way to mirror your entire desktop to your TV.
