How to use Canva Docs to create documents online.If you like using an online document creation tool like Google Docs or the web version of Microsoft Word, there’s another app you should try. Canva Docs gives the visual document creator the features you love for graphic design and presentations.You can use Canva Docs as a standalone application to create reports, proposals, schedules, or press releases. Better yet, use it alongside your other creations to provide a consistent style for documents, presentations, banners, infographics and anything else you design.Here’s everything you need to know to create your first Canva document.
Getting started with Canva documents
Canva Docs is free to use, just like Canva’s other design tools. Eat; however, some features are only available in Canva Pro, such as premium templates, photos, videos, and similar elements.You can go directly to the Canva Docs website and select Create Document to get started.
You can also visit Canva’s home page and select Documents at the top below the search field, and then Document</span. >below “Start Writing”. Note that you can also select Docs to Decks, which allows you to create document content and convert it into a presentation.
When prompted, sign in to your Canva account and start working on your document.
Use Canva document template
As with Google Docs and Microsoft Word, you can start working on your project using a template. Canva Docs offers a ton of options for creating many personal and business documents.Select Templates on the left. You can then select View All next to Document Templates to view the entire gallery or view the one-page themed headings below it. You can also use the categories at the top or the Search field for a specific template. If you see a template or title you want to use, simply select it to apply to your document on the right.
Whether you’re starting from a template or from scratch, you can use the same customization options for your Canva document. Insert elements such as tables, charts, or graphs, upload your own images or videos, and customize text with styles, colors, formats, or lists.
Inserting document elements
You have two ways to insert elements into a document.One way is to use the sidebar on the left. Select Items to add a table, chart, graphic, photo or video or Downloads to use an image or video from your device or social media account. Either select an element or use drag and drop to place it in the document. The second way to add elements is to use the Add Magic icon (plus sign) directly in the document.
When you select this icon, you will see a list of text formatting elements and tools that you can use. If you have Canva Pro, you can use Magic Write, Canva’s AI-powered writing tool.
Once you insert the desired element, you can customize it. Depending on the element you are using, you have different options.
Adding and customizing text
To insert text, select the Add Magic icon and select a title, subtitle, or body text. You can also insert a checklist, bulleted list, or numbered list. To customize text, select it and use the options in the toolbar at the top to choose the font style, size, color, format, spacing, and alignment.
Adding and customizing tables
To insert a basic table with a specific number of columns and rows, select the Add Magic icon, select Table. and use a grid to create the table.
To insert a pre-formatted table, select Items > Tables > View all in the sidebar. Then choose one of the options.
After inserting a table, you can add items to cells as if you were using a table in Google Docs or Microsoft Word. You can also add or remove rows and columns, merge cells, and move rows and columns.
- Select a cell in a row or column and use three dots to select an action.
- You can quickly add a row or column by selecting the plus sign at the top or left of the table.
- Finally, you can resize rows or columns by dragging the double-sided arrow that appears between them.
- For actions that apply to an entire table, select the table, then use three dots on the floating toolbar.
Adding and customizing charts
If you’re creating a company report or business proposal, you might want to add a diagram to the document. You can insert a histogram, column, line, line and point, interactive, or pie chart.To insert a basic pie, bar, or line chart, click the Add Magic icon and select the chart you want.
To insert a different chart or style, select Elements > Charts > View all in the sidebar. Then choose one of the options.
After inserting a chart, you can add data, adjust options, and customize it.
- Select a chart and use the Data tab in the sidebar to replace the sample data with your own. You can also expand Add Data at the bottom to download a CSV file or import a chart from Google Sheets.
- Then use the Settings tab in the sidebar to show or hide the legend, labels, and gridlines.
- To customize chart colors, spacing, markers, or specific chart elements, use the toolbar at the top.
- For additional actions, select the chart, then use the three dots on the floating toolbar.
View document statistics
If you’re working on a study document or creating an article, you may want to look at your word count or reading time.Click the Statistics button (graph) in the upper right corner. You will then see your document statistics in the Overview tab.

Share or download document
Like other Canva creations, you can share a Canva document with team members or colleagues.Select Share in the top right corner. You can then add people, copy a link, or get an embed code. You can also select Download to save the document as a PDF. Additionally, you can use the File menu in the top left corner to rename the document, save it to a folder, or download it.
