How to Use an Elgato HD60S with a Laptop to Record or Stream Console Gameplay

Posted on October 8, 2020 By blog_786 No Comments on How to Use an Elgato HD60S with a Laptop to Record or Stream Console Gameplay

Elgato HD60S is an external capture card that can be used to record or stream console gameplay via a PC. While many video capture cards plug into your PC’s PCI-E slot, the HD60S is external, which means you can use your laptop. In this guide, we will explain how you can use the Elgato HD60S with a laptop.

We’ll go through each step so you can make sure the process is correct. For the most part, all you have to do is install the correct software on your computer and connect it correctly. If you are using PS4, you will need to complete one step before the HD60S works. We’ll explain everything below.

Set up the console for recording or broadcasting

Firstly, if you are using PS4, you must first disable HDCP in the settings menu. To do this, turn on your PS4 and go to the settings menu. Go to the bottom of the settings menu and select “System”. From there, uncheck “Enable HDCP”. Restart your PS4.

Then visit Elgato to download the required software. After installation, you will need to restart your laptop.

Once you’ve done that, it’s time to connect your PS4 to your laptop. To do this, you need an HDMI cable and the supplied USB-C to USB 3.0 cable that comes with the Elgato HD60S.

Your laptop must have the following specifications.

– /

  • USB 3.0 or 3.1 port
  • HDMI port

After making sure your laptop has these items, take the Elgato HD60S and connect it to the console via the HDMI in port.

Then you must connect the USB-C port on the Elgato HD60S to an available USB 3.0 or 3.1 port on your laptop. Note. It must be 3.0 or higher or it will not work.

At this point, you have two options. You can connect PS4 signal to laptop via HDMI output or use this output and connect it to TV. With the latter option, you can view the PS4 signal on your TV as usual. If you don’t have a second display or TV, you will need to view the game using capture software. We will talk about it later.

Record or broadcast with the Elgato HD60S

Now that you’ve properly connected the Elgato HD60S to your laptop, it’s time to set up your streaming software. I would recommend using OBS Studio. You can download it here.

In OBS, click the “+” under the Sources field and select “Video Capture Device”.

Then you will need to select “Elgato Game Capture HD” from the device dropdown. OBS will now receive video from your console.

Finally, for OBS to be able to capture audio, you must right-click the new “Video Capture Device” in the source field in OBS and select Properties. In the properties windows, scroll down and click the Audio Output Mode drop-down list. Select “Output Sound to Desktop (WaveOut)”.

There are now two different routes:

If you’ve connected HDMI to your laptop: you’re done – you can start recording or streaming as usual, and all audio and video can be viewed through OBS Studio. Press F11 to view it in full screen mode.

If you have connected HDMI to another display: you will need to connect headphones to the audio port on the Elgato HD60S in order to hear audio.

If you’re new to OBS, there are two things to keep in mind first. First, if you’re just recording, you can click the settings button in the lower right corner of OBS and then go to the Output tab. From here, make sure your recording format is set to MP4.

If you want to broadcast, click on “Settings” and go to the “Broadcast” tab. Some services, like Twitch, allow you to sign in directly through OBS. Other services will require you to copy and paste the stream key from your streaming account dashboard.

Once set up, all you need to do is click Start Broadcast or Start Recording on the main OBS toolbar to get started. Optionally, you can tap to record and stream simultaneously.

Summary

That is where we come to the end of our guide to using the Elgato HD60S with a laptop. I hope this tutorial was helpful. If you need help or don’t know what to do, please leave a comment and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.
