NVIDIA graphics cards are powerful out of the box, but by updating your drivers, you will not only improve your PC and gaming performance, but also make your PC compatible with other peripherals.
Here’s everything you need to know about updating NVIDIA drivers.
Find out the model of your graphics card
Before you start, you need to know which NVIDIA graphics card is installed on your computer. The model name should be in the box that contains the card.
However, there is also a way to get this information using the DirectX Diagnostic Tool:
Open Run (Windows + R) and type DXDIAG.
Check which 32-bit or 64-bit system you have. You will need this information later. You will find the answer under the System tab under the Operating System section.

Go to the Display tab. Pay attention to what is indicated in the “Chip type” section. This is your NVIDIA graphics card.
Manually update NVIDIA
If you want to manually update NVIDIA, you will need to download the most recent drivers from their website. Then you will need to run the installer and overwrite the old driver. Here’s how:
Go to the NVIDIA GeForce driver download page.
Please search for the driver manually. Use the dropdown menu to narrow down your options.
Download the most recent version of the required driver. Once the download is complete, run the installer to start the update.
Note. We recommend users to back up before updating drivers. This way, you can just run System Restore and come back if something goes wrong.
If you still don’t know which NVIDIA graphics card you installed, you can use the auto-detect your GPU feature located under the manual driver search.
Update via GeForce Experience
GeForce Experience is a program that complements your NVIDIA driver. GeForce has been designed for many features including video capture, screenshots, live streaming, and driver updates.
Download GeForce Experience from the official site. After installation, launch the application.
You will be prompted to sign in to continue. Click Create Account if you don’t have one and fill out the online form. Otherwise, enter your credentials or sign in with Google, Facebook, WeChat or QQ.
After logging in, click the Drivers tab. Download and install any available drivers that you might need.
Update through Windows Updates
There are times when NVIDIA releases updates along with Windows updates.
Select Settings (Windows + I) Update & Security Windows Update.
Click Check for Updates to see if NVIDIA or Windows updates are available.
Click Download if applicable. Otherwise, Windows will notify you if your computer has the latest version.
Please note that some updates take some time to complete. And for critical updates, you will most likely need to restart your computer once or twice.
Therefore, if you update your NVIDIA graphics driver through Windows Update, you can keep your work and stop working until the updates are installed.
As mentioned earlier, it would be best if you could do a manual backup in case you run into difficulties updating your drivers. Usually, if you have System Restore enabled, Windows will take a snapshot before installing any driver updates.
