How to uninstall Chrome, managed by your organization

How to uninstall Chrome, managed by your organization.

Do you keep seeing the "Managed by your organization" message when you open the browser menu in Google Chrome? This is typical if the desktop device is part of a corporate network; System administrators often deploy policies to remotely control browser settings and permissions.

However, sometimes the message “Managed by your organization” may appear on your devices. This could mean one of two things. You have legitimate software like a third-party password manager that uses local policies to run on Chrome. Or you have malware installed on your computer.

How to uninstall Chrome, managed by your organization

Below you will find several methods that you can use to delete Chrome "Managed by Your Organization" message on Windows and Mac.

Scan for Malware and Browser Hijackers

If a malware or browser hijacker brings up a "Managed by your organization" message in Chrome, you can usually remove it by thoroughly cleaning your computer of malware.

Scan for malware

Start by scanning your PC or Mac for malware. If you have an antivirus scanner installed on your computer, run both a quick scan and a full system scan. On Windows, you can also use Windows Security (which you can open by going to Start> Settings> Update & Security> Windows Security) to scan for malware.

If nothing is found, perform another scan with the dedicated malware removal tool. The free version of Malwarebytes, for example, does an excellent job of detecting and removing malicious software. It is available for both PC and Mac.

Uninstall Sketchy Software

Apart from scanning for malware, you should manually check and remove any unfamiliar programs from your computer.

PC: Right-click the Start button and select Applications & Features. From the list of programs that appears, select each application that you want to remove and select “Remove”.

Mac: Open Finder and select the Applications side tab. Then drag all unfamiliar apps to the trash can.

Clean your computer (PC only)

If you're using Chrome on Windows, you can use the browser's built-in computer cleaning tool to eliminate malicious extensions and browser hijackers.

Open the Chrome menu and select Settings. Then expand Advanced in the left navigation pane and select Reset & Clean. Then choose Clean Computer> Find to search for malware.

Remove Configuration Profiles (Mac only)

On Mac, malware can install configuration profiles that break Chrome. Try to remove them.

Open the Apple menu and select System Preferences. If you see the profiles icon, select it and remove any suspicious configuration profiles from it. Then restart your Mac.

Delete Policies – Registry/Terminal

If you still see the Chrome "Managed by your organization" message, you should check for Chrome policies on your PC or Mac. To do this, type chrome: // policy in a new tab and press Enter.

After that, you should see all active or inactive policies under Chrome Policies. You can usually choose a policy to understand what it is all about.

If the policy is not associated with a trusted program or browser extension, you can uninstall it using Registry Editor on Windows or Terminal on Mac.

Note. It's usually a good idea to back up the Windows registry before modifying anything inside it.

Remove Chrome Policies on Windows

Press Windows + R, type regedit and select OK. Then copy and paste the following path into the address bar and press Enter:

Computer HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Policies Google Chrome

Select the Chrome key in the left pane of Registry Editor. Then right-click the Chrome policy you want to remove and select Remove.

Remove Chrome Policies on Mac

Press Command + Space to invoke Spotlight search. Then type in terminal and hit Enter.

Enter the following command in the Terminal window, replacing [policy] with the name of the policy you want to remove:

by default remove com.google.Chrome [policy]

Press Enter to remove the policy.

Reset/Reinstall Chrome

If you still see the "Managed by your organization" message, try resetting Chrome. If that doesn't work, you should consider reinstalling your browser.

Before proceeding, be sure to sync your Chrome browser data (passwords, bookmarks, autocomplete data, etc.) with your Google account by going to Settings> Google Sync & Services> Manage What You Sync.

Reset Google Chrome

Go to the Chrome settings screen, select "Advanced" and select "Reset and clean". Then select the option "Reset settings to original defaults" and select "Reset settings" to confirm.

After resetting Chrome settings, restart your computer and sign in to your browser. Then go to Settings> Extensions to re-enable browser extensions. Make sure the "Managed by Your Organization" message is displayed in the Chrome menu.

Reinstall Google Chrome

You can uninstall Chrome by going to the Apps & Features pane on Windows or the Applications folder on a Mac. Then delete any remaining folders.

How to uninstall Chrome, managed by your organization

PC: Press Windows + R to open Run. Then copy and paste the following folder paths and delete the Chrome folder from each directory.

  • C: Users % userprofile% AppData Local Google
  • C: Program Files Google

Mac: Open Finder and press Shift + Command + G. Copy and paste the following folder paths into the Go To Folder box and choose Go. Then delete the Chrome folder from each directory.

Once you've done that, restart your PC or Mac and reinstall Google Chrome. We hope this should permanently remove the "Managed by Your Organization" Chrome message.

Google Chrome: Managed By Yourself

You don't need to delete the "Managed by Your Organization" message in Chrome unless it is caused by malware or a browser extension. If you do this, you will end up only preventing the program or extension from working properly.

But suppose you have reason to believe otherwise (crashes and freezes in Chrome are another important sign that something is wrong). In this case, scanning for malware, removing browser policies, or resetting / reinstalling Chrome should help you get rid of it.
