How to Type Exponents on Android

If you are an Android user, you will be pleased to know that you can easily enter exponents on your device. This feature is built right into the Android keyboard.

1. Go to where you want the exponential expression and enter the base number.
2. Click and hold (tap and hold) the number you want to use for the exponent and select the superscript option from the small popup . up the window.

How to Type Exponents on iPhone and iPad

For iOS and iPadOS users, things are not so simple. You won’t find the superscript feature on the Apple iPhone keyboard. Instead, you will need to use the caret character, copy and paste the exponent, or add a new text label if you want to reuse the exponent.

One quick way to display an exponential expression is to simply use the caret on the numeric keypad. Select the location where you want the exponent, enter the base number, then caret and the exponent.

You may prefer to use the superscript format instead. Follow these simple steps to copy and paste it.

1. On your iPhone or iPad, visit a site that uses a superscript for the degree you want. For example, you can visit the Symbl web page and look up the number, or use these links to get superscript 2 or superscript 3.
2. Copy the superscript number from the site. You can do this by clicking on it, making sure only the exponent is selected, and then selecting Copy from the toolbar that appears.
3. Move to the desired exponent, click and select Insert from the toolbar.

Create replacement text

If you plan to reuse the exponent, you can create a text replacement and use it at any time.

1. Follow step 1 and step 2 above to place the exponent on the clipboard.
2. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad and select General > Keyboard.
3. Select Text Replacement and press plus sign at the top right to add a new one label.

4. Click inside the Phrase box and select Insert on the toolbar. You should see your exponent displayed as a superscript.
5. Use the Label field to enter the text you want to enter to activate the replacement. In our example, we’ll use “exp3” for the power of 3.
6. Select Save in the top right corner. Tip. Similarly, you can set up text replacement for additional exponents.

7. Go to where you want to insert the exponent and enter the base number.
8. Press the Space key, enter the keyboard shortcut you assigned to replace the text and press Space again to paste it. If you try to enter a shortcut without a space in front of it, it won’t work.

9. You can then hold down the Space key to move the cursor to the left of the exponent and use your style Backspace key to remove the space.
