Why Is Caps Lock Missing?
A Chromebook is an atypical computer. It was mainly designed for people who surf the Internet a lot and do a lot of online research. You don’t need Caps Lock to enter web addresses, search-friendly keywords, or even chat on forums. In the online world, the only case sensitive things are your usernames and passwords, so people don’t actually use Caps Lock that often because there is no need to type multiple letters or words in uppercase.
Caps Lock is mainly used to “yell†at people on the Internet, and it’s not an important feature that Google wanted to prioritize when developing Chromebooks. The Shift key works with capital letters in the same way as the Caps Lock key.
Another great thing about Chromebooks is its size. It is lightweight and compact and easy to carry. This required a smaller keyboard. The development team sacrificed any unnecessary or irrelevant keys that would take up extra space. Caps Lock was one such key. However, even though the actual key is gone, the functionality still exists in the background. You just need to search for it inside Chrome OS.
Using a Keyboard Shortcut to Turn Caps Lock On or Off
Chromebooks don’t have a dedicated Caps Lock key, but by default this function uses a keyboard shortcut.
Hold Alt + Search – Caps Lock will turn on. A message appears to confirm that Caps Lock is on.
To disable Caps Lock, just press Alt + Search. Alternatively, you can also press the Shift key.

Rebind the Search Button to Caps Lock
Using a keyboard shortcut to turn Caps Lock on or off can be impractical if you need to use it frequently. Luckily, Chromebooks allow you to reprogram the keys for other functions. Follow these steps to turn your search button into a Caps Lock.
1. Go to the app drawer and tap “Settings”.
Alternatively, you can find the Settings app using the search bar.
2. Scroll down to the Device section.
3. Select the Keyboard option for a list of keys that you can change.
4. Select Launcher or Search key. Click the drop-down menu and select the Caps Lock option. Your Chromebook’s search key will now act as a Caps Lock.
Pressing the key turns on the Caps Lock, and pressing it again turns it off.
To access the search or launch function, you will need to either remap a different key, or go to the Chromebook shelf and use it from there.
Use Caps Lock on Chromebook Carefully
Enjoy the natural feeling when Caps Lock is on your side again. Just remember to turn it off from time to time, or you may create the wrong impression.
