As a professional blogger, I take a lot of screenshots every day. Most of them I use and then just delete, but there are times when I need to save the screenshot for some future purpose. My main note-taking application these days is OneNote, and naturally I love saving my screenshots there in a separate notebook.
Depending on your version of OneNote and Windows, there are several different ways to add screenshots to a OneNote page. In this article, I will go over the various methods I know of.
Add screenshots to OneNote
The first method found in the ribbon interface is the Insert Screen Clipping option. Go to the Insert tab and you will see the Screen Cutting button.
When you press the button, OneNote disappears and you can capture any area on the screen with the rectangular tool. When you release your mouse button, a screenshot will appear on the page where your cursor was.

You will also notice that it says that you can use the WINDOWS KEY + SHIFT + S keyboard shortcut. This will work exactly the same as pressing the screen crop button in all versions of Windows prior to the Windows 10 Fall Creators update.
In the Fall Creators Update for Windows 10, the keyboard shortcut allows you to take a screenshot, but it will automatically be added to the clipboard instead of directly on the OneNote page. So, you will have to manually press CTRL + V to paste it.
However, for Windows 10 users, there is another keyboard shortcut – ALT + N + R. Using this shortcut, you can take a screenshot, add it to OneNote, and add the date and time when the screenshot was taken.
Another way to take a screenshot and paste it into OneNote is to use the taskbar icon that appears on the taskbar. First, it is probably hidden in the extra icons section, which can be accessed by pressing the up arrow.
Drag the purple scissors icon from there to the main area of ??the taskbar. Once there, right-click it, expand the default OneNote icon values, and select “Snap Screen”.
Now all you have to do to take a screenshot is to click the icon once. After you take a screenshot, it will ask you where you want to save it.
Luckily, you can check the Don’t ask me again box and always do the next option if you want your screenshots to be placed in the same place every time. If not, it might be better to select “Copy to Clipboard†and then paste the screenshot onto the desired page.
If the OneNote icon doesn’t appear on the taskbar at all, you’ll need to re-enable it. You can do this by right-clicking on the taskbar and choosing Taskbar Options. Then scroll down to the notification area and click the “Select icons displayed on the taskbar” link.
Scroll down until you find the Send to OneNote Tool option and turn it on.
Note that you can always take a screenshot of the entire screen simply by pressing the Print Screen button on your keyboard. The screenshot is copied to your clipboard, which you can then paste into OneNote. These are all ways to take a screenshot in OneNote, so hopefully these tips will make you more productive. Enjoy!
