How to Stop Autofill Passwords From Showing in Chrome

Posted on October 8, 2020 By blog_786 No Comments on How to Stop Autofill Passwords From Showing in Chrome

In this tutorial, we’ll take a look at how to turn off the display of auto-complete passwords in Chrome.

We’ll offer tips on how to completely remove passwords, or simply get rid of them on one computer while keeping them available on other devices when using your Google account.

I hope you find it easy to follow the guide below and can fix the problem within minutes.

How to Stop Autofill Passwords From Showing in Chrome

How to remove autofill passwords, but only from one device

If you want to disable or remove autofill passwords from one device, you need to disable sync and then delete the cache so that your passwords are no longer stored on that device.

If sync is disabled, your browser will no longer check saved passwords on the Internet associated with your Google account. Alternatively, you can also just sign out of your Google account, but you will lose all saved websites, browsing history, or other data.

In any case, you should delete the cache after. We will explain both methods below and then explain how to delete the cache.

To remove autocomplete passwords but stay signed in

  • In Chrome, click your profile icon in the upper right corner.
  • Click your profile icon again when the drop-down menu appears.

You now have two options. You can turn off sync for everything, or just turn off password sync.

For the first option, simply click off next to sync with …@email.com at the top of the page.

Alternatively, you can turn off password sync but leave other synced data on. To do this, click on “Sync & Google Services” just below the disable option.

On the next page, you can click Manage Sync, which will take you to a page where you can choose which features to disable sync for. First, click the Sync All switch to move it to the Off position. Other parameters will then be unlocked. After that, click the Passwords radio button to turn off password synchronization.

Remove autofill passwords on exit

This option won’t remove your autofill passwords, but it will log out of your Google account, which means you can only clear your cache and remove passwords from the device you are using.

This is an easier option if you are using a shared computer, but you may prefer the option above if you want to sync your browsing history and other data.

To exit Chrome, open a new tab. In the new tab, click the profile icon in the upper right corner. The one that sits inside the page itself, not in the browser’s navigation bar. Then click “sign out” in the drop-down list that appears.

How to remove cache to get rid of autofill passwords

Whether you are signed out of your Google account or simply removed the password sync, you must now clear your cache to get rid of the auto-complete data that was saved locally in your Chrome browser.

To delete the cache in Chrome, click the three vertical dots in the upper right corner. In the drop-down menu that appears, click “Settings.”

In the new window that appears, click Advanced, and then check the boxes next to Passwords and other login information and Autofill information. Finally, click on Clear Data. The autocomplete data will now be removed from your current device, but not from your Google account.

How to remove autofill passwords across all devices

If you want to remove AutoFill passwords on all devices at once, follow the steps listed below. The process is much simpler than the options above because you just need to access the settings in your Google account.

Visit myaccount.google.com first. You should be logged in already. If not, be sure to sign in and select the correct account.

On the left side of the screen, click Security. Then scroll down and find Password Manager. After finding it, click on it.

On this page, you can now delete any saved passwords. Before leaving, you must click the settings icon in the upper right corner. You will then be prompted to disable saving password. Click to disable the “Prompt Password Saver and Auto Login” feature.

If after deleting passwords they still appear at login, you may need to clear your cache as well. This can be different for each device and will depend on whether you are logged in and whether you used autocomplete on that device prior to logging into your Google account.

In any case, clearing the cache can be done in the same way as above. Below is a quick reminder.

  • Click the three dots in the upper right corner.
  • Click Settings.
  • Scroll down and click Advanced.
  • Scroll down again and click “Clear browsing history”.
  • On the new page, click Advanced.
  • Click Passwords and Other Login Information and Autofill Form Data.
  • Click Clear Data.

Summary

That’s it – two different methods to prevent your autofill passwords from showing up in Chrome. These two methods are good for different reasons. The first method is useful for erasing your data from one device, while the second is for erasing it from all of your devices.
