Really large files are common. As the quality of our media improves, so do the files. Compression software can compress an HD-quality movie into a one-gigabyte file, but for most people, this is time-consuming and impractical.

What happens if you want to move such a large file? Is it possible to split a large file into smaller parts to make sharing easier?

Here’s how to split a file into multiple files using free software.

GSplit

GSplit is a free file splitting tool that can be used to split large files. With GSplit you can:

· Controlling the size of individual split files and the types of output files

Combine your split files into one file

Create a custom naming scheme for split files

Use Express file separator to quickly separate files

Create merging separate files

First, download and install GSplit. When you’re ready, open GSplit and select Source File from the menu on the left. Find the file you want to split. Now choose Destination Folder from the menu and navigate to where you want to place the multiple split files.

Before going to the split file! option (where separation occurs) open the Type and Size menu. You can use GSplit to split a file into multiple files in several ways. For example, you can specify how many output files you want and GSplit will tell you how large each split chunk will be. Alternatively, you can set the size of each output file and GSplit will tell you how many files will be generated.

It is also possible to split files according to a given pattern according to the contents of the file (although this is an advanced option).

Once you have decided on your file splitting configuration, select Split File! Followed by Split!. GSplit will start processing your file. The time it takes to split a file into multiple files depends on the complexity of the output options and the size of the source file.

GSplit creates a handy executable file when you want to rebuild your files. You will find the executable file in the same folder as the split files. Double-click the executable file to start the rebuild process and confirm the location of the output file. The default executable name is disk1.EXE, although if you create your own naming scheme it will match your settings.

GSplit includes a rebuild tool called GUnite. From the GSplit top menu, select Merge. GUnite will open in a new window.

Browse to the location of your split files. You should find the folder containing the GSplit parts with the.GSD file extension is shown in the image below.

Select the first file in the sequence, then select Output to confirm where you want to save the file after reconstruction. Finally, select Recover File. Like the file splitting process, the recovery process takes time depending on the file size, the number of fragments, etc.

First, right-click the file you want to split into smaller parts, then select 7-Zip> Add to Archive. Give your archive a name. In the “Divide into Volumes” section, in bytes, enter the desired size for the split files. There are several options in the dropdown menu, although they may not fit your large file. In this case, you can specify your own output file size.

When ready, click OK and let 7-Zip split the large file into smaller pieces.

If you want to recover fragments of a file, find the first split file in the archive, right-click and select 7-Zip> Extract to [Filename]. You will find the source file in the output folder.

FFSJ

FFSJ, or fastest file splitter and merge, is your last option for splitting and merging large files. With FFSJ, you can:

Split large files into multiple files

· Automatically delete original files

· Encrypt output files for added security

You will find easy-to-use options to split the file into equal parts or split using files of a specific size. There is also the option to delete the original file after splitting the file or encrypt the output files for added protection. If you choose to encrypt files, you must enter a password before starting the file separator.

To split a large file using FFSJ, select the input file and then the location of the output file. Likewise, if you want to merge split files, open FFSJ and select the Merge tab. Browse to the folder containing the first part of the split file, then add the output folder for the recovered files.
