MacBook offers excellent battery life and typically allows moderate to vigorous all-day use on a single charge. However, it is important to regularly monitor the level of charge remaining, as intensive tasks and unoptimized applications can drain your battery quickly. However, with macOS Big Sur, it’s not that easy.
If you’ve just updated macOS Catalina, you would immediately notice that the battery indicator is missing from the Mac menu bar. There is a familiar battery icon, but it is not an accurate picture and can often be confusing.
Show Battery Percentage in macOS Big Sur
Despite removing the battery percentage indicator from the menu bar, macOS Big Sur allows you to check the percentage of battery remaining. Select the battery icon to open the battery status menu and you will see information on the first line. However, this is not something that you would like to repeat all the time.
Fortunately, you can still switch back to showing the percentage indicator on the Mac menu bar itself. In macOS Catalina and earlier, the battery status menu included a Show Percentage toggle that made it easy to turn the feature on and off. But macOS Big Sur buried that deep inside the system preferences panel.
Here’s how to show the battery percentage in the menu bar in macOS Big Sur.
1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Preferences.

2. Select the Dock & Menu Bar option.
3. Scroll the side panel to the left and select Battery.
4. Select the Show Percentage check box.
The battery indicator should immediately appear to the left of the battery icon in the Mac menu bar.
There are third-party applications that can be used to add additional battery information to the menu bar – we’ll cover them below.
Other Battery-related Additions and Changes in macOS Big Sur
macOS Big Sur comes with an iPhone-like Control Center that combines options like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Do Not Disturb. This helps reduce clutter in the menu bar.
Optionally, you can add a battery icon and percentage indicator to the Control Center. To do this, check the Show in Control Center option under System Preferences> Dock and Menu Bar> Battery. You can also clear the Show in Menu Bar checkbox to remove them from the menu bar.
Also, macOS Big Sur ditches Catalina’s power saving settings and instead has a dedicated battery bar – you can bring it up by selecting Battery Settings from the battery status menu. It provides statistics on battery usage over the last 24 hours and 10 days, again similar to the iPhone.
You can also access the old power saving settings (sleep, Power Nap, etc.) by toggling between the Battery, Power Adapter, and Schedule side tabs in the Battery Settings panel.
Apps to Show Battery Percentage and Time Remaining
Third-party battery apps can not only display battery percentage in the menu bar in macOS Big Sur, but also provide quick access to even more battery-related information. Here are three such programs that deserve a closer look:
- Coconut Battery
- Battery Medic
- Simple Battery Monitor
Note. If you choose to use any of these apps, you can always turn off the standard battery icon and percentage indicator to avoid unnecessary clutter in the Mac menu bar.
Coconut battery
coconutBattery allows you to better understand the health of your MacBook’s battery. It displays the number of cycles, health status, temperature, full charge and rated capacity, manufacturing date, and so on. Connect your iPhone or iPad to your Mac, and you can also get a similar set of information by switching to the iOS Device tab.
Alternatively, you can glue the coconutBattery right to the menu bar itself. Open the coconutBattery settings, go to the General tab and check the Run coconutBattery in the background, and display information in the menu bar.
By default, cococutBattery adds a percentage indicator to the menu bar. Instead, you can customize the display of remaining time, charge cycles, watt usage, and more by pasting the appropriate options into the Format box – the icon next to it displays a list of them.
Also, select Show Battery Icon if you want a battery icon to appear next to the percentage indicator (or whatever option you display).
After adding coconutBattery to the menu bar, you can select it to view additional information about the battery (like remaining time, temperature, number of cycles, etc.) in the menu format.
Battery Doctor
Battery Medic runs directly in the Mac menu bar and displays a colored battery icon and percentage indicator by default. Select the icon and you can view a lot of additional information such as time remaining, battery status, charge cycles, etc.
Optionally, you can add the remaining battery life from the menu bar itself. Open the Battery Medic menu, select Settings and check the Show battery life checkbox.
In addition, you can choose to receive notifications when the battery level reaches an upper or lower threshold using the sliders under the low battery notifications and the full battery notification.
Simple Battery Monitor
As the name suggests, Simple Battery Monitor is much simpler compared to coconutBattery and Battery Medic. It displays a battery status icon, percentage indicator, and time remaining in your MacBook’s menu bar. You can also select it to quickly see the number of charge cycles, but that’s about it.
As for the setting, you can disable or enable the percentage indicator using the Show percentage switch in the Simple Battery Monitor settings submenu.
Accuracy Does Matter, Apple
Visually, macOS Big Sur is more consistent and less cluttered than its predecessors. However, Apple went too far by removing the battery indicator. But, as you just learned, you don’t have to do much to get it back. However, accessing additional battery-related information with an app like coconutBattery or Battery Medic is the best way to extend your Mac’s battery life.
