The Shield TV 2019 remote is full of features like backlit buttons, remote locators and of course volume buttons. But if you’re new to Sheild Remote, you can’t help but wonder why the volume buttons don’t work at first. This is because these buttons control the volume of the TV, not the device, and need to be adjusted. You can use HDMI-CEC or IR to adjust the volume on your TV. If you’ve connected a home theater system or speakers to your TV, the Shield TV Pro also has options for that, and I’ll explain that in more detail when we get into the setup. Let’s start.

Set up the volume controls on New Shield TV Pro

To customize the controls, grab your Shield TV remote and go to Settings on your Shield TV.

Here you can toggle the HDMI-CEC switch to turn it on, if your TV supports this function, you can adjust the volume with that. For the unknown, HDMI-CEC allows for a feature found in most modern TVs, which allows you to control basic live streaming functions such as volume and media playback from the streaming device’s remote control, and vice versa. To find out if your TV has HDMI-CEC, you can always google the model number.

You can try and if it works, you can just complete the setup here. However, if your TV is old, or if your soundbar, receiver, or home theater supports infrared, you’ll have to set it up manually.

To do this, select “Change IR setup” to start the setup process.

Shield TV will now try to run some tests to see if the code works with your device. Make sure your Shield TV remote is pointed towards the device’s IR sensor. Also, do not press any buttons on the remote control while executing the code.

Most streaming devices like the Roku, Firestick, and Android TV have volume controls on their remotes, and the New Shield TV Pro follows suit by offering IR controls. While this is better for casual consumers, I prefer to have these controls. What do you think? Isn’t the lack of sound control in the system too important? Let me know in the comments below.
