I recently bought an Echo Dot 3 with a TP-Link smart plug. Okay, I got a discount if I bought them together, so I did. While it is very easy to connect Alexa using the Smart Plug, it can be tricky if you don’t follow the exact instructions. I will show you how to set up a TP-Link smart plug with Alexa. Let’s get started.

Setting up a TP-Link smart plug with Alexa is a two-part process, and we’ll follow each step separately to avoid confusion.

Let’s set up the smart fork first. I have a TP-Link HS100 smart plug and we need to install the Kasa app and pair the smart plug with the app.

Step 1

Install Kasa app on your smart phone, you can go to Play Store and App Store to download it for Android and iOS respectively. After installing it, you will need to create an account in order to be able to register your devices with TP-Link servers, and it would be easier to link her with Alexa later.

Step 2

Once you’re done, log in to your account and register your smart devices with it. It helps create a network of devices and can be easily accessed using one common channel. You can add multiple devices to your account and you will see a range of TP-Link smart home devices available.

To register TP-Link HS100, click the “Add Device” button in the upper right corner. Now select the type of smart adapter / device you are trying to register. In our case, we will choose HS100. Click on the icon to continue.

Step 3

Now return to the Kasa app, it should register your device and ask for your home wifi credentials. You can select your home Wi-Fi from the list and enter the correct password.

Both devices are now configured exclusively and will work fine independently. In order to pair your smart device with Alexa, we need to enable the TP-Link skill.

Step 7

To set a skill, go to the Alexa app, tap the hamburger icon and select skills. Find TP-Link and it will show you the results, select TP-Link Kasa Skill. Install it in your Alexa account.

For easy access, you will need to link your TP-Link account with Alexa. It will load the page and ask for TP-Link credentials. Enter your details and click “Login”. After successfully signed in, you can return to the Alexa app.

Now that your TP-Link account is linked to your Alexa account, it will let Alexa manage your devices seamlessly. Go to the devices tab by clicking the button in the lower right corner. Tap all devices and find the smart plug, tap the icon and it will automatically detect the paired device from TP-Link account with Alexa.

It will now show up in the list of devices in your Alexa account and you can initially manage all devices. You can also change the device name to make it look more natural when sending commands to Alexa. I named my smart socket “Table Lamp” because it only powers the table lamp and seems more natural when I ask Alexa, “ Alexa, turn on the table lamp “.
