Enable Screen Time on iPhone
First things first: turn on Screen Time on your child’s iPhone.
Open the Settings app and tap Screen Time.Tap Turn on Screen Time and tap Continue to continue.Make sure you select “This is my kid’s iPhone.” This setting provides additional parental control over Screen Time for personal use.
You can now schedule Downtime, set app limits, set up content limits, and more. First, though, set up a Screen Time passcode.
Set Screen Time Passcode
You’ll need to create a four-digit passcode to apply Screen Time restrictions and other parental controls. Here’s how to set up a Screen Time passcode.
Go to Settings > Screen Time and tap Use a Screen Time passcode. Set a four-digit Screen Time passcode and re-enter your passcode. Finally, enter your Apple ID account information (email address and password). for recovery purposes.Enter your Apple ID email address, enter your account password, and click OK in the top right corner.
If you ever forget your Screen Time passcode, you can reset it using your Apple ID. Please note that the recovery Apple ID must be different from your child’s Apple ID.
Now you can start setting up various parental controls on your child’s iPhone.
Set Up Downtime
Downtime is when your child(ren) cannot access certain apps or features on their iPhone. More precisely, the period when you want them away from the phone. For example, before going to bed or during school hours.
Open the Screen Time menu, select Downtime, enter your password, and click Turn On Downtime Until Tomorrow to enable Downtime immediately.
To set a fixed downtime period, select the Scheduled checkbox, set the days and hours of downtime, and check the Block During Downtime checkbox.
During downtime, your child will only be able to make cellular and FaceTime calls, send messages, and use Maps. To remove an app from downtime restrictions, open Screen Time, select Always Allowed, and tap the minus sign next to the app. To add an app to your Allowed Apps list, tap the plus sign next to the app in the App Picker section.
You can limit communication during downtime. For example, your kids will be able to connect with people on their contact list via phone calls, FaceTime, and messages during their downtime. To restrict communication to specific contacts, go to Screen Time > Always Allowed > Contacts and select Specific Contacts. Then click “Select from my contacts”, select your contacts and click “Done” to save your changes.
Set App Limits
Then set a daily limit for using the app. Thus, limiting the hours your kids spend on certain apps or websites, etc.
Open Screen Time, select App Restrictions, click Add Restrictions, and enter your password.
Select “All apps and categories” to apply the usage restriction to all apps. Or select a specific application category. Enter the name of the application in the search bar for quick access. Then click “Next” in the upper right corner of the page.
Note. IOS will automatically set a limit on all new apps installed in the category you choose.
Set a time limit in the Time section.Expand the Day Settings subsection to set a different time limit for different days of the week. Otherwise, click “Add” in the upper right corner to set the limit.
Let’s say you want your kids to spend more time playing games or social media on the weekends, this is the perfect place to do it.
Select the day whose time limit you want to change, set your own time limit, and return to the previous page.Make sure Block at End of Limit is enabled and click Add to save the app limit.< /li>
You can also use the App Restrictions menu to limit the amount of time your kids spend on a particular website. If you can access app content in a web browser, you should also set a website limit. For example, if you set a restriction for the YouTube app, you should also create a website restriction for “youtube.com”. So your kids won’t be able to access YouTube through the app or Safari.
Please note that this is not the best option for blocking access to adult websites or sites with adult content removed. In the next section, we’ll show you how.
Go to the Application Restrictions menu, create a new restriction or edit an existing application restriction, and click Website. Then click “Add Website” and enter the URL of the website. Click “Next” in the upper right corner, set the time limit, check “Block at the end of the limit” and click “Add”.
Your children will receive a notification 5 minutes before the limit and another when they reach the limit. Then, with your consent, they can continue using the app by clicking “Ask for more time” in the notification.
To approve more Screen Time, tap Enter Screen Time Passcode, enter your passcode, and grant the user access for 15 minutes, an hour, or a full day.
To remove an app restriction, go to Settings > Screen Time > App Restriction and select the restriction you want to remove. Enter your Screen Time passcode and click Remove Restriction.
However, one of the major downsides is that the daily app limits are reset every day at midnight. Therefore, you will have to configure them manually.
Set Content & Privacy Restriction
This is where you set up your child’s iPhone to block inappropriate, explicit, or adult content that is inappropriate for children. The tools in this section can also prevent your children from accessing inappropriate web content, using pre-installed apps, or making purchases from the App Store.
Adult Content Restriction
Screen Time has an adult content filter that will automatically restrict your child’s access to many adult websites.
Select “Content & Privacy Restrictions” from the Screen Time menu, click “Content Restrictions” and enter the Screen Time passcode. Then click “Web Content” and select “Restrict Adult Websites” . Apple will automatically block access to adult sites in its database.
If any adult site or inappropriate website bypasses the restriction, manually add that website to the web content restriction. Click “Add Website” under “Never Allow”, enter the URL of the website, and click “Done”.
Better yet, select the “Only Allowed Websites” option. This will block all websites and allow access to websites with safe and kid-friendly content. Click “Add Website” to add the website to the list of allowed websites.
Restrict explicit content and language
You can set parental controls to prevent Siri from responding to or searching for content that contains profanity, swear words, and other profanity.
Go to Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions > Profanity and select Don’t Allow.
To stop web searches using Siri, return to the Content Restrictions page, select Web Search Content, and select Do Not Allow.
Take Your Time With It
The Screen Time tool has a lot of parental control settings that we can’t cover in this guide. That’s why we recommend taking the time to learn about Screen Time and set it up properly on your child’s device. You can use this tool to censor inappropriate or unrated content: movies, TV shows, music videos, podcasts, and more.
Be sure to set a Screen Time passcode before making any parental controls. It is very important. Your child can bypass certain restrictions or disable all settings without a password.
