Is your laptop keyboard not working the way it used to? Is it taking too long to respond to keystrokes? When I press some keys, nothing happens? The keyboard has stopped working?
In this post, you will learn how to reset keyboard preferences to get rid of annoying keyboard issues.
Is it a hardware problem?
First, you must determine if what you have is a hardware problem. After all, no amount of reboot can fix a broken laptop keyboard.
There are several ways to do this. First, you can physically examine your keyboard for obvious defects. Another is to boot into Safe Mode.
Press Windows + R to open Run. Enter MSCONFIG and click OK.
This will launch the system configuration. Go to the Boot tab. Under Boot Options, select the Secure Boot check box and click OK.

If you are prompted to restart your computer, click Restart.
When Windows is in Safe Mode, only essential programs run. So if your keyboard works fine in this mode, you can blame the software for keyboard problems.
Otherwise, you might have to bring your laptop to a service center for a proper inspection and diagnosis.
Is it a software problem?
But if this is indeed a software problem, there are several things you can do. You can try reinstalling our keyboard driver.
Reinstall keyboard
Open Control Panel. Select Hardware and Sound Devices and Printers Device Manager.
Note. You can also access Device Manager by doing a quick search.
After opening Device Manager, expand Keyboards and right-click your device. Click Remove Device.
Reboot your computer. During the restart, Windows will reinstall the keyboard using the latest drivers. This can cause the keys on your laptop keyboard to work again.
Change settings
If that doesn’t work, the problem might be your keyboard settings. If any keyboard settings are disabled, it may cause repeat delay errors or register incorrect keystrokes.
To access the keyboard settings, open the control panel. Enter KEYBOARD in the search bar.
This will cause the keyboard properties to appear in the search results. Click “Keyboard” to open.
Using keyboard properties, you can speed up or slow down the keyboard response. Use the sliders to calibrate the keyboard to your liking.
The image above shows the default keyboard settings. If your current settings are far away, it can cause your keyboard to lag behind or run faster than usual.
Click OK when finished.
Additional keyboard settings can be found in Windows Settings. Select Settings Accessibility Keyboard.
Disable any features of your computer keyboard that might interfere with your workflow. Additional keyboard settings can be toggled by clicking Change other input options.
Best way to reset keyboard in Windows 10
If you’ve tried to fix all of the above errors but nothing seems to work, try resetting your keyboard.
To do this, you need to make changes to the language setting. Go to Windows Settings Time & Language Region & Language.
In the Preferred Languages ??section, add a new language. Any language will do. Once added, click the new language. It should now display several options, including the up and down arrow buttons. Click the up arrow to make it your primary language.
This process will place the new language at the top and the old (presumably English – US) at the bottom. Repeat the process, this time returning the English language – US.
This will reset your laptop keyboard. Now you can delete the added language. You can also click Options and check if US QWERTY is available in the Keyboards section.
If all else fails, use an external keyboard until you find a definitive solution to your problem.
