How to Remove Background Noise in Skype Calls.
Laptops are not as effective at canceling noise. Smartphones, on the other hand, have an array of microphones that cancel out noise and provide decent sound during video calls. However, there is a small tool called Krisp that removes a significant amount of background noise and provides sound quality that is no worse than in your office. Here’s how to remove background noise from Skype calls and other video conferencing apps.
How to remove background noise in Skype calls
Krisp is an artificial intelligence based application that removes static background noises and other dynamic sounds from your calls. It also boosts your voice so you can get rich sound during video calls. Crisp also works on the other side. This means that it also filters the speaker sound by removing noise.
Crisp operates on a freemium model. If you use your organization’s EmailID, you will receive a 14-day free trial. Please advise that the app only allows 120 minutes of noise canceling per week. To upgrade and get unlimited minutes, you’ll have to shell out $ 3.33 per month.
Accommodation
Krisp offers dedicated apps for Windows, macOS, iOS, and even a Chrome extension. It supports over 600 video conferencing apps like Slack, Hangouts, Messenger, Join.me, WhatsApp, etc. Since I am on Linux, I am using the Chrome extension on the Brave browser. All you have to do is download, install and subscribe to the Krisp Chrome extension.
Post this, click on the extension when you are in a video call and you will have a toggle called Mute Noise. Once you turn it on, the extension will start filtering out noise coming from your microphone. Crisp is working on artificial intelligence, so it takes time to pick up your voice among other ambient noise and human voices. So, make sure you give it an extra 10-20 seconds and a couple of lines of samples to adapt to the ambient noise and your voice.
Simple test
Below is a Skype test call we made in our office amid music and other outside noise. You can see the before and after audio sample and the difference in ambient noise.
Also, Kaushal has a dedicated Krisp review article that covers everything from macOS, iOS to Windows app. He did several other tests as well, and you can find a sample in his article.
