Having trouble signing in to Facebook? If you’ve forgotten your login information or your Facebook account has been hacked, there’s no reason to panic. There are several different ways to recover your Facebook account if you are unable to sign in.
If you think your account has been hacked, you should probably read Facebook’s basic privacy tips and make sure it doesn’t happen again. But if for some reason you just can’t remember your login details, a simple recovery process should help you access Facebook again.
Check if you’re still logged in
It sounds silly, but the first thing to do if you sign out of your account is to check if you have an active Facebook session on one of your devices. For example, if you are unable to log into your Facebook on your smartphone, you may still be logged in from your desktop, and vice versa.
This is probably the easiest way to recover your Facebook account since all you need to do here is manually change your password in your account’s privacy settings.
Therefore, if you find that you still have an active Facebook session on one of your devices, follow these steps.
- Click the drop-down arrow in the upper right corner of the screen and select Settings.
- From the left menu, select Security and sign in.
- Under Login, look for Change Password. Click Change to change your password. If you don’t remember your current password, click Forgot your password? to reset it using your email address or phone number.
After that, if you suspect that someone has hacked your account, in the same menu go to Where you are logged in.

Here you can choose to Log out of all sessions. It will log you out of every active Facebook session except the current one. You can then log in securely with your new password.
Sign in to Facebook using account recovery options
If you find yourself signed out of Facebook on all devices, the first thing you need to do is try to sign in again with the default Facebook account recovery options.
- Log into Facebook and click Forgotten Account? in the upper right corner of the screen.
- The Find Account window will open.
- From there, you can follow a few different steps to identify your account.
The first option is to enter your email address or phone number. If one of them is associated with your account, Facebook will send you a verification code and you can easily reset your password and sign in again.
If you are unable to log into Facebook with your usual details, you can also try using a different email address or your phone number.
If you entered more than one email address or phone number when you created your Facebook account, this may be your way. It is assumed that you still remember your password, or store it in a password manager.
Even if you don’t see this in the Find My Account window, you can use your Facebook username to regain access to your Facebook.
Enter your name or a possible username (if you don’t remember exactly) in the search bar and see if it appears in the list. When you see your profile picture, click “This is my account” and follow the instructions to reset your password and sign in again.
Restore Facebook account with trusted contacts
If all the strategies we mentioned above have failed, the next step is to try to restore your Facebook account using trusted contacts.
The only problem here is that Trusted Contacts is an option that you need to set up before you log out of Facebook. Therefore, even if you have successfully logged into your account, we advise you to think ahead and set up your Facebook Trusted Contacts right away.
- On Facebook, click the drop-down arrow in the upper right corner of the screen and go to Settings.
- From the left menu, select Security and Login.
- In the Recommended section, find “Select Friends to Contact If You’re Blocked” and click Edit.
You will then be prompted to add 3 to 5 friends that you can contact if you run into problems with your account. You can later edit this list by adding or removing people.
After activating trusted contacts, it will become much easier to log into your Facebook account if you forget your credentials.
- When you sign out of Facebook, click Forgotten Account.
- In the Reset Password window, click No Access to Them.
- Enter your new email or phone number and click Continue.
From there, you will receive instructions on how one of your proxies can help you regain access to your account. Your friend will need to follow a special link and then send you a recovery code. After that, you can safely login to Facebook again.
Secure your account for the future
You can log out of Facebook for one of two main reasons. Either someone hacked your account, or you forgot your login details. For added security, you can set up two-factor authentication on Facebook, and to avoid the latter, start using a password manager to keep your data close at hand.
