What Is an MHT File?

However, there is no specific standard for creating and using MHT files, as many applications display and save the file in different ways. This means that if you create an MHT file using a specific browser, the file may or may not display correctly in another browser.
If you save a web page to use images in a file. You may not be able to do so if images on the Internet are moved, renamed, or deleted. This is because MHT files do not save images. They only store links to images on the Internet.
Also, if the images in the MHT file are changed. You won’t see them when you try to open the file in another browser.
MHT files differ from HTML files in that while MHT files contain image files and other related media assets in a single file. HTML contains only the textual content of a page. Any images you see in HTML files are links to local or online images that are loaded when the HTML file is loaded.

This is because these files are stored offline in a single accessible file, and any linked links pointing to external files will be re-mapped and point to links contained in the MHT file during the creation process.
How to Open an MHT File
If you need to move files to your computer or other storage location, you can easily move any web pages that you have saved as separate MHT files. This saves you the hassle of creating additional folders when saving web pages, and you can access files offline.
Apart from Internet Explorer and other major browsers, there are several programs that can read MHT files. You can use Microsoft Word to write and read MHT files, but you can also use WPS Writer or any other program on your PC that can read it.
Note. Microsoft Word supports MHT file formats. But will not open the file if the hyperlink in the file is damaged or corrupted.
To read the MHT file using another program, right-click the file. Choose Open With, and select the program you want from the list.
Other programs that can open MHT files include HTML editors such as BlockNote or WizHtmlEditor, or a text editor. Alternatively, you can open the MHT file in Internet Explorer and save it in HTML or TXT format.
You can also convert the MHT file to a regular HTML file using a program like MHTML Converter, Doxillion Document Converter, or CoolUtils.com, which converts MHT files to PDF. If you need an MHT file in other formats like DOC, PDF, MSG, PST or HTML, you can use the Turgs MHT Wizard.
What to Do When an MHT File Won’t Open
If you’re still having trouble opening your MHT file on your computer, the issue might be with your file association. Try re-associating the file extension with Internet Explorer and see if that helps.

- Select default applications.
- Select the default you want to set and select the application. You can select new apps from the Microsoft Store. But you need to install them before installing them as default apps.
