If you are downloading a very large torrent using uTorrent, you might run into a free space issue halfway through the download. For example, I once downloaded a 100 GB torrent but didn’t realize that there was only 75 GB left on my C drive.
I started getting low disk space errors from Windows and realized it was due to torrenting. At this point, I didn’t want to delete the entire torrent and start over by downloading it to a new location, so I figured out how to move all downloaded files to a new location and then continue downloading the rest.
Previously, if you were using an older version of uTorrent, you had to manually move the files yourself, but the newer version moves the files for you! In this article, I’ll show you how to move a torrent download before it’s complete.
Transferring incomplete torrents
Step 1. The first thing we need to do is stop the current download so that the files are not available or uTorrent updated. To do this, simply right-click the torrent and select Stop. Do not pause download.
Step 2: Now that the download of the torrent has stopped, we can change the download location for this torrent. To do this, right-click the torrent again, select Advanced, and then select Set Download Location.
A new dialog will appear asking where to download the torrent file. Go to a new location and just click “Select Folder”.
uTorrent will automatically move files to a new location for you. You may have to wait a bit if you need to move a large amount of data to a new location.
Step 3: Now that the files have been moved, you need to start downloading again. Just right click on the torrent and select “Start”.
The download will continue from the percentage that it has already been completed, and the rest will be downloaded. This can save a lot of traffic compared to re-launching, especially for very large torrents.
The process is exactly the same for Mac users running OS X. Just stop the download, then right-click the torrent and browse to the new download location.
The files will be automatically moved to the new location, just like in Windows. Overall, this is a fairly straightforward process that works well. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to leave comments. Enjoy!
