How to Measure Distance in Adobe Photoshop.
Photoshop is a great photo editing tool. The best thing about Photoshop is that you can use it for creative photography, but you can also use it for simple image modifications and tasks.
For example, you can use this software to measure distances, objects, and even angles. Photoshop has a dedicated Ruler tool that lets you not only measure distance, but also align and enhance images. Here’s how to use the ruler to measure distance in Photoshop.
How to Measure Distance in PhotoshopÂ
If you want to create the perfect image in Photoshop, you will need to accurately mark the distances in the photo and create or cut objects of the calculated dimensions. Photoshop has a handy Ruler tool that lets you do this.
With the Ruler tool, you can create measurement lines between any two points on the image in any direction. Lines can tell you the size of the object you are measuring, the distance between objects, and the angles and exact coordinates of the object in your photo. These lines are not printed and only serve to help you position the image or its elements correctly.
How to Use the Ruler Tool in Photoshop
Before you can start measuring distance in Photoshop, you need to know where to find the Ruler tool and how to read the measurement attributes.
If you don’t see the Ruler tool when you open an image in Photoshop, choose View from the menu, and then choose Rulers. Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + R (for Windows) or Cmd + R (for Mac) to do the same. You will see a ruler scale and an information bar around the image.
By default, the Ruler tool displays distance in pixels, but you can change it to one of the following: inches, points, centimeters, millimeters, peaks, and percentages. To change the unit of measure, right-click the ruler and select one of the options.
How to Measure Distance Between Two Points
To measure the distance between any two points in Photoshop, you need to draw a measurement line using the Ruler tool. You can do this by following these steps.
- Select the Ruler tool in the sidebar of Photoshop. If the ruler tool isn’t visible, select and holds the Eyedropper tool until other options appear. Then select the Ruler tool.
- Start the line at the first point and drag it to the second. You can also hold down the Shift key to make sure that your line only moves at and a multiple of 45 °.
After that, a measuring line will appear on the image. You can then use the Info panel to find the following information about your image or its elements:
- X and Y representing the starting point.
- W and H representing the horizontal and vertical distances traveled along the x and y axes.
- A representing the angle measured relative to the axis.
- L, which returns the length of the line. More than one line length will be displayed as L1, L2 … and so on.
- The size of your document.
In addition to the angle, all measurements in the “Information” panel are displayed in the previously set units. If you have not changed the units of measurement, by default they will be calculated in pixels. If there is already a measurement line in your document, it will appear on the screen when you select the Ruler tool.
How to Modify a Measuring Line
If you mistakenly draw a measurement line in the wrong place, you can always edit it. To edit a measurement line in Photoshop, follow these steps.
- Select the Ruler tool.
- Depending on how you want to change the measurement line, do one of the following: drag one end of the line to resize the line, select and move the line to another location in the document, or drag the line out of bounds image to completely remove it from the document.
How to Measure an Angle in Photoshop
You can use the Ruler tool to measure the angle in your image by creating a protractor. You will need to create two measurement lines instead of one so that you can determine the angle between them. To do this, follow these steps.
- Select the Ruler tool.
- Start the line and drag it to the endpoint.
- When the first line is ready, hold down the Alt / Option key and select the endpoint of the first line.
- Drag the second line to the next endpoint.
In the Info panel, you will find the angle between the two lines you have already calculated. It is marked with the letter A.
Learn to Do More in Photoshop
The Ruler tool in Photoshop can be extremely useful if you need to measure the exact distance between objects, find out the exact angle between lines, or get the exact coordinates of something in your image. You can even use this tool to straighten your image if you don’t want to crop it in Photoshop.
