As you watch a Twitch streamer in action, you might consider using emotion to grab their attention or show what you are thinking. Twitch emotes are like emojis: they display a small picture to show your mood or send a message that can convey more emotion than a simple text message.

Twitch already comes with various emotes for all users to use, but if you are a Twitch Partner or Affiliate, you can add Twitch Custom Emotes to your channel for your followers. However, if you want to use Twitch emojis, there are certain rules you need to follow. Here’s what you need to do.

Design Rules for Twitch Emotes

Twitch has certain rules that you must follow when creating your own Twitch emotes. Failure to follow these guidelines could result in the closure of your Twitch channel, so be sure to follow them exactly.

First, you need to make sure that your Twitch custom emoji does not violate Twitch’s terms of service. This includes avoiding emotions that can cause harassment, threaten violence, break the law (for example, advertise drugs), promote racism or sexism, use nudity, etc.

If you’re confident that your own Twitch emoji isn’t breaking the rules, make sure it is formatted correctly and uses the PNG file format. If you are using a â€œsimpleâ€ emoji upload, you only need to upload one image from 112 by 112 pixels to 4096 by 4096 pixels.

For more complex (and better quality) uploads, you need to upload three different images (28 by 28 pixels, 56 by 56 pixels, and 112 by 112 pixels) to zoom in. All images must have a transparent background and be less than 1 MB in size.

As we mentioned, you can only use your own Twitch emotes if your Twitch account has achieved Affiliate or Affiliate status. New Twitch streamers will have to wait for their account to reach this point before they can start adding their own emotes unless they decide to switch to the Twitch alternative instead.

How to Make Twitch Emotes Using Photoshop

Assuming you have the right idea for a custom Twitch emoji, the next step is to figure out how to make high-quality Twitch emoji. If you have Adobe Photoshop, you can quickly create the right emotion in the right size with a transparent background.

If you don’t have Photoshop, you can use alternative software (like the open source GIMP) to create the Twitch emotion.

First, open Photoshop on your PC or Mac and create a new image by clicking the Create New button.

Make sure the image you are creating is between 112 x 112 pixels and 4096 x 4096 pixels (for â€œsimpleâ€ uploads) in the Width and Height boxes. For “advanced” downloads, you will need to repeat this step and create three separate images (28x28px, 56x56px and 112x112px).The canvas you create must also have a transparent background. To verify this, choose Transparent from the Background Content menu, then choose New to open a new Image Canvas and start working.

On a blank canvas, you can create a new Twitch emote. This can include shapes, other images, or text (but not a single letter or number, unless they are part of your Twitch brand as per Twitch guidelines). You will need to make sure the background of the image is transparent if the entire canvas is not filled.

After creating a new emote, choose File> Export> Export As to save the file.

In the Export As menu, set the PNG format from the drop-down menu, making sure the Smaller file (8-bit) check box below is selected. Make sure the file listed on the menu is less than 1 MB. If the file is larger than 1 MB, you will have to reduce it by adjusting the width and height of the image before exporting it, or make additional changes to the canvas. Click the Export button to save the image when you’re ready.

In the next step, choose where you want to save the file and give it a name, then click the Save button.

After you save a Twitch emote, you can proceed to upload it to your Twitch channel using your Twitch channel dashboard as described below.

How to Make Twitch Emotes Online

If you don’t have Photoshop and don’t want to install alternative photo editors on your PC or Mac, then you can create Twitch emotions online instead.

There are several ways to do this, but one of the easiest is to use a tool like Google Drawings to create a transparent image at the dimensions you want.

To get started, go to the Google Pictures website and sign in. A blank canvas should appear automatically. To resize the page, choose File> Page Setup.

For Page Options, select Custom from the drop-down menu, then resize to match Twitch’s minimum requirements as above (for example, 112px by 112px to 4096px) … 4096 pixels for “simple” emotion loading). Click the “Apply” button to confirm.

Use the Google Pictures canvas to create emotion using shapes, text (excluding individual letters and numbers outside of your branding), and other embedded images. When you’re finished editing, choose File> Load> PNG Image (.png) to load the picture as a PNG file.

In the next step, you will need to choose a filename and location to save. After you upload the file (assuming it’s under 1MB), you can start uploading the Twitch emote to your channel.

How to Add a New Twitch Emote

As we mentioned, you can only download a custom Twitch emoji for your channel subscribers if you have reached Twitch Partner or Affiliate status. If you haven’t, you need to wait before you can complete these steps.

If you are a Twitch Partner or Affiliate and would like to download the new Twitch emote, go to the On Twitch Website section and sign in. Click the account icon in the upper right corner, then select the Creator Control Panel option.

From the creator toolbar menu, click the hamburger menu icon in the upper right corner, then select Settings> Partner or Partner depending on your account status.

In the “Subscriptions> Emotion Settings” section, you can control the emotions of the client channel. You will have Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 emote options that enable users with those levels of your channel subscription to use them.In the “Upload emotions” section, upload the image (or images) of the Twitch emotion and enter the text code to use it in the “Unique code” field. If you are satisfied with how the emoticon looks, click the Submit Changes button.

Customizing Twitch Further

Once you know how to create Twitch emotes, you can further customize your channel by adjusting your streaming bitrate for better streaming. However, before getting started, you need to make sure you have the correct Twitch streaming software installed.
