How To Make a Discord Server

Learning to create a Discord server is surprisingly easy. You can set up a server in a few minutes and the whole process is completely free.

After the Discord server is created, you can invite friends, set permissions, and set up text and voice channels.

Don’t worry if you are new to Discord, this guide will help you learn all the essentials about server setup.

How to create a discord server

Whether you have installed the Discord app for Android or iPhone, have a desktop app, or are using the browser version, creating a Discord server is the same.

Start by selecting the + sign on the left side of Discord’s UI. On a mobile device, you need to touch the three lines in the upper left corner of the screen to access this panel.

This is the add server option. Once you’ve clicked or touched it, select the option to create a server.

Then give the server a name. You can also click the circle with the initials of your server name to select an image for the server. Click “Create” when you’re done entering your name and picture.

You will now be asked to send out invitations to your friends. You can do this later, but if this is a friend-only server, it’s a good idea to start now. You can click to immediately invite friends from your friend list. If the friend is not on your friends list, you will need both the Discord username and their tag. For example, your Discord username is # 0343.

After that, you probably want to create multiple channels. There are two types of channels on Discord. You have text and voice channels. The text feed can be viewed as a separate tab on your server, and all messages sent there will be saved for later viewing regardless of who is online. The voice channel is different.

By clicking on it, you will join this voice channel and will be able to chat with anyone on this channel as well. When you finish speaking, you will need to log out of the voice channel by clicking the mute button at the bottom of the left sidebar.

To create a new channel, you can click the + buttons under the voice and text channel sections on Discord server. Alternatively, you can click the edit button on the auto-generated shared channels to change their name.

How to add new users and manage permissions

If you need to invite others again, click your server name in the left pane. On a mobile device, you must touch three compound lines before the panel appears. Then click Invite People. Now you can directly invite people again.

Alternatively, you can copy and paste the provided link. Anyone who uses this link will receive an instant invitation to join your server. If you click the edit invite link button, you can control how many users will use the link before it expires, or for how long. This can be useful to restrict access to your server.

It’s safe to just use the server once you’ve created your Discord server if it’s just you and a few friends, but if you want to use your server with a larger audience or chat with people you may trust less, you should create roles and permissions.

To do this, click the button to the right of your server name on the left sidebar. On a mobile device, you will need to press the three menu buttons again before you can see this panel. Then click Server Settings. On the new page that opens, click Roles.

On the Roles page, click the + button next to the Roles field. Give the role a name and color – they will appear in this color when sending messages in the text feed. You can now scroll through the list to give this specific role different permissions. For example, you can choose whether this role can offload other members, use the @everyone role to notify all members, or create your own server invitations to send to others.

You can create a role for your closest friends so that they can take complete control of the server when you are offline, or a new role for untrusted users so that you can restrict access to what they see.

To give a user a role, simply right-click their username in the right sidebar. This panel is pinned to the screen in both browser and desktop versions. On mobile, you can open the right side panel by swiping left from the right edge of the display.

On the desktop, right-click the user’s name in the list and hover over the roles section. You can click to assign any roles to them. On a mobile device, touch the user, then touch user control. After that, you will see the option to add or remove this user with any role.

If you want to restrict access to some text or voice channels, you must also assign them roles. To do this, click the edit gear button next to the channel. On a mobile device, you must first click on the channel name and then click on “Change channel”.

For text feeds, you must click each role separately and set read and post permissions. To do this, click or tap the red cross, green checkmark, or gray slash to get the results you want. A green check mark means the role has access to that permission, a red check mark means they cannot access it. A gray slash means that this role type will require all default permissions. (Either administrator or non-administrator.)

You can do the same for voice channels, but the resolutions are slightly different. You will need to change the permissions for Channel View, Connect and Speak for each role.
