How to Install Custom Fonts on iOS 13 and iPadOS 13.

iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 now support custom fonts. While you can install custom fonts in both newer operating systems, it’s worth noting that these newly installed fonts will only work in certain applications. Setting up a system-wide font would make more sense as it would mean consistency and uniformity across applications. However, this is great news for people who work in the creative field. I’ll show you how to use custom fonts anywhere and in any application.

Artists, writers and other creatives will now be able to use different fonts while working on their craft. Fonts can lift your spirits, help convey your personality, or simply make positive changes. Apple has partnered with Adobe, which means it will definitely work with Photoshop (coming soon) among other applications in the future.

Let’s start.

1. Fonts manager in supported applications

The font manager option is available in applications that support custom fonts. This is because there are no system-wide settings, you will need to enable them inside every application you need them for. This also means that you have to check individual applications for this setting. A bit of a hassle, but so far it is. Let’s try it in the Mail application. It’s also available in the Keynote, Pages and Numbers apps, but that’s about it. Expect to see it in other apps soon.

Open the Mail app and click anywhere on the screen to launch the default Apple keyboard.

This will also work with third party keyboard apps like Gboard. This is what I am using, but I will also share a screenshot for the default keyboard.

If you are using the default keyboard, you will need to click on the arrow pointing to the right before you see the Aa button.

2. Install Custom Fonts on iOS 13 and iPadOS 13

While Apple was generous enough to include multiple fonts to choose from, there is still a lot more to explore. If you, like me, want to install custom fonts on iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 that are not available by default, you can get them from the App Store. Open the App Store and search for “fonts” to find several font apps. An example of such an application would be Font Diner. Install and run the application and click “Activate” to install all the fonts that come with the free version. There were 23 of them at the time of this writing. You can unlock more by purchasing the premium version.

After installing the app, you will find all the fonts that come with the app under Settings General Fonts.

Pick the one you like and you can now use it in supported apps like Mail, Word, etc. Please note that the default fonts that came pre-installed with iOS 13 are not shown here. This option is only available for third-party fonts that you have installed separately.

3. Use Custom Fonts Anywhere on iOS and iPadOS 13

To use custom fonts anywhere on the system, inside any application, not just those currently supported, you will need to download and install the font keyboard. Switching to this keyboard will allow you to use the selected font in any application instead of applications that are currently supported by Apple, which are very limited.

While there are tons of font keyboard apps out there, I would recommend that you try Cool Fonts. Why? Because they not only offer unique and stunning fonts, but they also allow you to choose themes to create the look of your keyboard. Before you can use any font keyboard app, you need to enable it in settings.

Open Preferences and under Cool Fonts, select Keyboards.

Now toggle the setting to enable it.

Once you’re done, you’ll be ready to use these fonts when typing your next masterpiece. Return to the Mail app or any other app and tap anywhere to open the default keyboard. Now you know how to switch keyboards (we discussed this above). See if you can switch to Cool Fonts keyboard.

Click on the F icon to select the font you want to enter. There are so many fonts to choose from, and if you need more, upgrade to the pro version to unlock even more.

Depending on the font keyboard app you installed, the default process will remain more or less the same. You turn on the keyboard, then activate it, and finally switch to it in the keyboard settings. The process of installing new custom keyboard fonts or activating it will remain the same in both iOS 13 and iPadOS 13.

Install Custom Fonts in iOS 13 and iPadOS 13

There are two ways to install and use custom fonts. One is the default way where you can install new fonts and then activate them for use in supported applications. Another method is to use a dedicated keyboard with custom fonts, which will allow you to use the selected font in any application. Each has its own pros and cons.

The first method will let you use your favorite keyboard, which could be the Apple Keyboard or Gboard, which has a number of features like search, YouTube and Maps integration, etc. The second restricts you to the functions that come with the keyboard fonts, but allows you to use selected font in any application.
