Whether you’re editing graphics, playing video games, or watching movies on your Windows 10 PC, taking the time to improve display quality can go a long way towards enhancing the overall experience.
In this article, we want to explain to you how you can improve color accuracy, brightness and contrast right from Windows 10.
We’ll also offer some tips on how to tune the best settings for your particular monitor model and show how AMD and Nvidia also offer great display control settings.
A good display quality setting starts with a good screen
If a high quality display with accurate colors is important to you, you should start with the monitor itself. If you have a cheap monitor, you may be missing out on better color fidelity, more brightness, and better contrast.
Below we have selected three available options that are particularly well known for their excellent display quality at their price point. Keep in mind that professional grade photo editing displays can cost a lot, much more, but we’ve focused on the options available here.

How to calibrate your screen to get better colors
Whether you buy a new monitor or stick with your current one, the next step is to calibrate your monitor using the built-in color and display settings.
In most cases, the default settings are acceptable, but after extensive testing by the community, you can often find the best settings online.
Since there are thousands of different monitor models on the net, I cannot explain how to optimize your monitor settings. Instead, I can help you find suitable settings online for yourself.
Bookmark this page first so you can return to the next steps later.
Then look at your monitor for the correct model name. It can be printed on the front of the monitor. Alternatively, you can press the Windows key and search Display.
Click Change Display Settings in the search results.
On the display settings page, click Advanced display settings.
On the next page, click on Display Adapter Properties.
Then click “Monitor” to see the name of the monitor.
If you are working on a laptop, it might have Generic PnP Monitor written on it. In this case, you need to skip this step and go to Windows 10 calibration settings in the next step.
Once you know the name of your monitor, simply search Google for the best display settings for “Monitor Modelâ€. Replace “monitor model” with your own model. You should find great guides in different communities and forums.
Once you’ve done that, don’t forget to come back here for our next tips on how to improve display settings in Windows 10.
How to improve display settings in Windows 10
It’s very easy to learn how to improve display settings in Windows 10. We’ll walk you through the next steps.
First, open the Windows Start menu and type Calibrate Display Color.
Click the result that appears. You can then go through the Windows 10 Color Calibration Wizard. This will show you if the colors on your display are accurate and you can adjust the display if they are not.
As you can see below, you will be presented with various tests to help you calibrate gamma and color balance. Some settings you can edit right in the wizard, while others require you to change the display settings right on your monitor.
For complete details, read my previous post, which walks you through all the steps of the Windows display calibration process
This is basically what you can do to improve color accuracy in Windows 10. You can also adjust brightness and resolution by typing display in the Start menu and opening Change Display Settings.
Improve display quality further with video card drivers
So far, we’ve looked at how to improve the display settings on the monitor itself and in Windows 10. Both of these steps are great for improving color accuracy and getting the most out of your monitor.
However, if you want to enhance contrast, brightness, or brighter colors, you will need to change your display settings using your graphics drivers. Remember that these changes can affect the color accuracy – if you want the best color accuracy, keep the default settings.
There are two main players in the graphics card industry – NVIDIA and AMD. We’ll show you how to change the display settings on both devices.
How to further optimize display settings with NVIDIA
First you need to open the NVIDIA Control Panel. To do this, click the Show Hidden Icons button in the right corner of the taskbar.
Then right click on the NVIDIA icon in the hidden icons section. After that, you can click on NVIDIA Control Panel.
Once in the NVIDIA Control Panel, you can click on “Customize Desktop Color Settings” and from there you will have a few sliders to control.
It’s up to you how you want to set the display settings here. Adding brightness, contrast, gamma, and digital saturation can make colors more vibrant in video games and movies.
If you want more saturation and brighter colors, you can change these settings. (Contrast and digital brightness in particular.)
How to further improve display settings with AMD
If you have an AMD graphics card, you can follow these steps to improve your display settings.
Since I have an NVIDIA graphics card, the images go to AND support for the images we are using to explain the process.
First, click the hidden icon option in the Windows 10 taskbar.
Then click the Radeon Settings icon in the icon bar.
You will be taken to the AMD Radeon Settings app. Click the Display tab to navigate to the desired location.
Once in the Display section, you can tap Color for better control over the appearance of your display. Please be aware that this option is unfortunately not available for all AMD graphics cards.
On the next page, you will have the ability to control brightness, hue, contrast, and saturation. To improve digital brightness in games and movies, you should use the contrast and saturation sliders.
